Barrel aging

Has anyone tried barrel aging? I found this site:

I like the fact that they have different sizes so I am not stuck with the 30 gallon where I have to make a ton or get a bunch of people to come in on it with me.

For those that have done it, do you use old whiskey or wine barrels (or both)? How long do you age? How many times do you use the barrel and what do you do between uses to keep it in good condition?

Anyone have sources for 5 gallon or smaller barrels?

I'd think that if you're not going to get a barrel that has been used for wine, whiskey, etc. in the past (and thus imparts more than just oak character), it'd be easier to just use oak chips or cubes.
