Thinking about trying the barleywine recipe from page 54 of this month's zymurgy... Put the thing in beersmith with a couple of tweaks to match my equipment though and was rather shocked to see that it only calculated out to about 53 ibus.. Do i have something messed up? Seems this might be a touch sweet.. What are your thoughts? Appreciate any help anyone can offer.

I have only made a few beers that big, and none of them have been 'ready' for about 6 months. By that time, most of those late addition aroma hops are gonna be MIA. If it were me, I would want it a bit more balanced. The BU:GU of that brew is roughly 1:2. Mine have all been closer to 1:1. Then again, I like hops :).

Looking again, 1.25oz of FWH Chinook should give you way more than 14 IBUs. That doesn't seem right.

I'm not sure what's going on with your Beersmith, but when I put in just the Chinook FWH, I get 73.9 IBU just from those without the other additions. Not sure what setting you're using, but something's wrong in your Beersmith, not in the recipe.

Set your bitterness adjust to Rager and FWH utilization to -10.

O.k. that took me up to 90.4 IBU a little more what I was thinking....

Is -10 the proper setting for FWH? I think I had mine set to -65 because of something I read that Denny Conn wrote up once...
