I opted to not put this in the DIY section, because not a whole lot was done by me. However, this full bar and brew room build was a LONG time in the making (probably longer to research than build), and with it finally done I thought I'd share. This was essentially the finishing of 2/3 of our unfinished basement, with general contractors doing the overall build (electrical, walls, etc.), while I took care of "only" the wooden wall planks, the bar top creation, and the tap wall. The brewing area remained in the unfinished/storage area, while the rest of the basement was turned into half full bar, half lounging and movie area.
Bar
Brewery (last two pics)
My previous brewing area was on the other side of the new, far wall in the first picture. The new space kind of looks to be a jumbled mess (especially the sink/hose area) compared to most people's shiny brew spaces, but this is much better than it was: better optimized for vertical storage, items in intuitive locations, etc. I have plans to further optimize once I've got more brew sessions under my belt in it, but so far am ecstatic with it.
Bar
- After 10+ years of not building out my upright fridge to use faucets ("someday I'll...."), I took the opportunity to finally change over my entire draft system from picnic taps to DuoTight and EVAbarrier (both gas and liquid).
- I ultimately went with spring loaded NukaTaps. Due to the spacing, I split them between three studs by reinforcing the shank area with a 1x6.
- The full upright fridge was moved from the far corner (in the first pic) to behind the tap wall (where the air compressor is). It butts right up to the wall so additional cooling wasn't needed.
- I drilled thru-wall of the fridge and with only about a foot of line exposed, pipe insulation works well for temps.
- It was hard to find a 20" drip tray (had to go with one website and hope for the best), and a glass rinser was a must-have.
- The bar top is easily the focal point of the bar-side area. It's a 8.5' slab of black walnut with a large number of epoxy coats. It was my first go at epoxy, so I'm content with the results.
- Lights were Wayfair headaches and am relieved they're finally installed.

- Folded into finishing our basement, I added on some brew room necessities (plumbing, large utility tub, 220V electrical, etc.) to be able to move from propane in the garage to full electric in the basement.
- After exploring hoods and HVAC capabilities, I determined that running a steam condenser was a much more viable (and cheaper) option.
- On brew days, just to hedge my bets, I also run a dehumidifier.
- I use and induction cooktop to heat sparge water (when not doing full-volume batches), and ultimately will give decoction a try with it.
