Ball lock gas post and disconnect question

I recently purchased a ball lock keg, my previous ones have been pin lock. After I hooked up the ball lock on Friday, I realized there was a leak yesterday and my CO2 tank is empty.
My question is about the gas disconnect that goes on the post. Is it supposed to fit all the way to the bottom of the post? I am wondering if my leak is because I am not pushing the disconnect far enough down on the post. I stopped pushing it on when I met resistance but am wondering if I should be forcing it?
