I'm thinking of picking up a sack of Bairds Pale Ale Malt from the Country Malt Group. Does anyone know how this compares to say Muntons Pale Ale Malt? I usually use Muntons, and I think it is Pearl barley. Country Malt has T&F Pearl Pale Ale Malt, but I read on HBT that it tends to have a smokey flavor.

Bairds is excellent malt. ??? on smokey flavor with any basic UK pale malt, never heard that before nor tasted it.

Baird's pale ale malt is made from several winter barley's, not just the single Pearl variety. The flavor will be a little different, but is a good pale malt. Fawcetts carry single maltings like Golden Promise, Pearl, Maris Otter, Halcyon, Optic. Their pearl has a bready toasty note to the flavor. I never tasted smokiness from it.
