I used to do 5 gallon extract brews years ago and liked it very much. Then I moved into smaller apartments in a city and didn't have the room. Recently I bought a bigger place and one weekend walked into a store that sold Mr. Beer kits. I bought one and my first batch wasn't bad at all. I substituted 2 lbs honey for the booster-sugar that came with the kit. The beer is OK sort of bland with slight sweet finish but it seems to get better each week in the bottle. I have just ordered more ingrediants and will try a few more batches with Mr, Beer before I decide whether to get back into brewing with bigger batches /carboys. My biggest problem is time, I have a 5 year old now and while I would like to brew I need to simplify the process hence Mr. Beer. I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments. Thanks.

I can understand the time thing but my extract brews take 3 hours from start to clean-up. That's about as long as your typically sports game. As far as your 5 year old, sounds like a good age to "help" out - or at least keep you company. I usually brew with 6 kids in the house. I wait for the 2 year old to nap but the 4 and 7 year olds will help if needed (or if they're bored).

I say go for it. It will be great for you and for your kid.
