Hi, fairly new to homebrewing but I've been brewing more than I can drink lately and am running out of bottles so my boss, who also brews, gave me a box of 22oz bottles since he has kegs and doesn't use them. Anyways they were dusty from sitting in his basement but mostly clean on the inside, rinsed the outside, blasted hot water with my bottle washer, and plan to sanitize, but one had some cobwebs and some dead spiders inside, is that ok to use?

short version: should i use a bottle with dead spiders inside?

I washed it out, it's all clean so should I sanitize it? always hear if something is growing inside throw it out..technically it wasn't growing so not sure

I use bottles growing mold and all kinds of nastiness. Just clean and sanitize really well.

They are in the oven right now, I usually use Star San but my boss recommended baking in an oven at 338 for an hour with tin foil on top, the heat should sterilize the bottle until the foil is removed, I just have to let them cool overnight and I should be able to bottle tomorrow. Thanks for the peace of mind guys!

Use caution when capping and carbing these bottles. Pyrex glass is oven proof. Beer bottle glass may not. It has been done before, but regular cleaning and sanitizing is still the safest way to go.

I always worry when people talk about putting bottles in the oven. I think it weakens the glass.

A soak in PBW or oxyclean free for a bit, the use of a bottle brush (I use that only when I get crusty bottles back from people), then i let dry upside down. I sanitize the day of bottling.

I would use free 22 oz bottles with spiderwebs in them all day long. I just hope to not have to deal with the spiders.

You should be fine. I used the oven when I still bottled. The key is slow temp changes. Bugs don't care if it takes 2 hrs to get hot, at sterilization temps they die. Same is true on cooling, do not open the oven door, let the temp drop slowly.
