I am getting ready to start my next batch and I am craving an IPA. Anyone have some good suggestions on AG recipes? I will be doing a 5 gallon batch. I looked at some of the recipes on the sticky, but was just looking for some input on what others liked. A tried and true recipe so to speak. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

I just did this recipe on Sunday. I kinda came up with it on a whim but the wort tasted really good.

12 lbs pils malt
.5 lb Crystal 40
1 lb Victory

1 oz Perle @ 60 min
1 oz chinook @ 30 min
.5 whirfloc tablet @ 15 min
1 oz chinook @ 10 min

Yeast - US-04

This one is fairly simple and is always a crowd pleaser.

With that post title, you will probably be bombarded with recipes!

Here's one that I modeled after Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale. Its been such a big hit that I brew it a couple of times a year now. It's got a good malty backbone that stands up to the hops.

12 lbs Maris Otter Pale Malt
1 lb Crystal 80
1/4 lb Carapils dextrine malt

60 minutes - 1 oz Chinook
20 minutes - .75 oz Centennial
10 minutes - .75 oz Centennial
5 minutes - .75 oz Cascade
1 minute - .75 oz Cascade

Mash 90 minutes at 154
Boil 90 minutes

Dry hop in secondary with:
.75 oz Chinook
.75 oz Centennial
.75 oz Cascade

Yeast White Labs WLP001 Cal Ale

OG: 1.064
FG: 1.014
IBU: ~66
ABV: 6.4%

I am hoping to get bombarded with recipes. There is a lot of great info and a lot of great brewers here. And if I get a 1000 recipes ...well you know what they say. "Variety is the spice of life." Or is it "Hops are the spice of life,"?

Hmm skeeordye...I have 3 ounces of Amarillo hops in the freezer right now. I love this hop. Might be a good one to try...

I'm going to have to vote for this one, granted its a different style than the others posted, but simcoe/amarillo are both sublime in an American IPA. If you dont have warrior you can sub more simcoe/amarillo for bittering. Looks a lot like my cascade/centennial/amarillo recipe... which tastes great so far even though its flat and not dry-hopped yet. cheers! :mug:

I'm about to brew the 4th variation of this beer this weekend and no 2 have ever been the same honestly. I used an oz of Simcoe for bittering the 1st time (that won an honorable mention) but the comments were not enough bitterness so I wen to the Warrior. I just received 4oz of Summit from steelers77 so I'm going to use that this weekend. As previously stated, the simcoe/amarillo pairing is incredible. As an asside, I have also used a citra/amarillo mix in an APA that came out wonderfully as well.

Nice! Simcoe makes a great bittering hop because of its low cohumulone content, but because you dont get that sharpness from the cohumulone you seem to need more of it (resulting in smooth bitterness and more flavor, IMHO). The Summit might be good, keep us posted. I've had an all citra/Simcoe IPA from a brewery outside of Yakima (Snipes - Sunnyside, WA) and its one of the best IPA's I've ever had. I think that Citra/Simcoe/Amarillo and to a bit lesser extent Cascade/Centennial all mesh very well and you really cant go wrong with mixing a few together for an American IPA. :mug:

+1 on citra/amarillo mix, Skeeordye11. I brewed this one a few weeks back, and it really turned out nicely for those who enjoy a lot of hops.

9lbs 2-row
3lbs Light Munich
10oz 60L Crystal
9oz Corn Sugar (5-min boil)

Mash 1 hour at 152

1oz Nugget- First Wort Hop
.5oz Amarillo, .5oz Citra at 20min, 15min, 10min, 5min each
1oz Amarillo- Dry hop 7 days
1oz Citra- Dry hop 7 days

US-05 yeast

OG: 1.065
FG: 1.014
IBUs: 90+

I did have problems with this one though; we had a poor mash efficiency, and mashed a couple degrees higher than the target temp. So I added an additional 3oz of corn sugar when racking to secondary to try to dry it out and increase the alcohol a bit.

Also, we had several boil-overs, then a thunderstorm passed by, and we had to turn off the burner while we moved it under the eaves, holding an umbrella over the pot for the rest of the boil. Forgot the vorlauf too.

And I realize only now after writing all this that this does not sound like a "tried and true" recipe. So forgive me for that, but hopefully it'll give you some ideas.

Maybe "tried and true" was a wrong choice of words. How about this "I made this and every hop head I knew loved it". Or this "I made this and most of them loved it," or "I made this beer and all my friends hated it and I loved it. But unfortunately they are BMC drinkers and do not care for hoppy beers." Not that I wanted to start a BMC debate, just stating that that isn't the style I was aiming for, beer taste aside, and I know most of my friends and family do not care for craft beer, unless I am aiming for a very light lawnmower beer. Then half of them like it. I better be careful here, I think I am about to hijack my own thread....

Im an extract brewer trying to make a hoppy simcade ipa in the 7.5% abv range with a lighter color than most IPAs- pilsner looking (Anyone have hop wallop from victory- similar goal with hoppiness and appearance) Wondering what people think of what I came up with:

og: 1.075
Fg:1.019
4.14 SRM
85.3 IBUs

8.5 lbs extra pale lme
2-row carapils malt 1lb
Simcoe 1 oz 60min
Simcoe 1 oz 30 min
Amarillo 1 oz 10 min
Corn sugar- 1.5 lb
WLP008- east coast ale
Cascade 2 oz (Dry hop 7 days)

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Personally, I would substitute some of that corn sugar for more base extract. The biggest problem that I had with my last IPA (recipe in this thread) was the lack of body, and I think the corn sugar may have contributed. I ended up using 12oz in fermenters then 4oz to carbonate.

While this is not unheard of in IPAs of that size, I think it was too much, so my bet is 1.5lbs is also too much. I'd suggest sticking to the 0.5 - 1 pound range if you must use corn sugar.

This is my house IPA and just took first place in a local competition. As always, adjust for your efficiency and system...

I appreciate it, I've never been a fan of adding corn sugar to the recipe so this was going to be the first. Would you suggest bumping the lme up to 9.5lbs, or adding more to the carapils? I was even thinking maybe instead adding some cara/crystal 10L for the body. I was most worried about the high og, hoping to not come out with a sweet malty beverage. Lastly what do you think about the hop bill?
