Has anybody heard of or tried eating hop shoots? SWMBO sent me this link yesterday and wanted me to print it for her. She wants to try this next spring. I'll try any food thing once, I'm not sure if I should try this with my cascade, centennial, willamette or kent goldings.

There's also a link in the article about making pickled hop shoots. I wonder how good they would taste.

I did this this spring. I found the flavor appealing, but the texture was NOT GOOD.

I sauted in butter with a bit of salt and pepper for seasoning. The tips were fine, but immediately below that the stems and tiny leaves were "hairy" and when you swallowed it was like trying to swallow a hairball. They are more chewy than asparagus too.

All in all, I consider them edible, but I will not be harvesting them again.

Homercidal, how long(tall) were the shoots? Maybe they were too hardy?
Thanks for the info, I can't wait to try.
I will probably put them in the oven a bit to soften then sauté.

Couple of inches. Nothing probably over 8" tall. I bet you could probably cut them when they were 1-2 inches, but you don't get much that way. The ends of the shoots were just about as chewy and hairy as the stalks though.
