So as I posted earlier, my first batch is bottled and on its way. Obviously every little thing makes me think I've screwed up. Here is the latest and it may seem odd. Should I be able to smell the beer through
the cap? It makes me think it's not airtight. It sounds ridiculous I know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you turn the caps with a small amount of effort? If so then they may not be on tight enough. You may also be smelling beer that was on the lip of the bottle when being capped!

Rinse a bottle or two under the faucet and if they still smell like beer check the caps for tightness!

Good luck

So I tried to twist the caps and shook a bottle up. All is well. Must have been some residue or something.

Again,

Thanks, all!

I've gotten that frequently. You're just smelling what little dribbled down the outside of the bottle when the bottling wand was pulled out. It startes to evaporate during the first day or so in the storage boxes. No biggy.
