alt bier bole (old beer bowl)?

My wife is more of a wine girl but when she was an exchange student in Germany she had "alt bier bole" and loved it. as far as she remembers it was a wooden bowl with fruit topped up with some kind of beer. It was served in the spring/summer. Does any body know more? google has not been that helpful...
