Hi,

Are there just preferences or are there rules for use of a glass carboy?
Is an airlock sufficient, as with a bucket, and the use of a blowoff tube just an extra precaution? Or is the blowoff tube a requirement with a carboy?
I will be switching to using a carboy soon for primary and want to be sure it's done right.

It's the same as with a bucket. At least with a carboy you can tell in advance whether your fermentation is going to be violent enough to require a blowoff tube. If the krausen isn't threatening to rise into the neck of the carboy, a airlock is fine. You can use a blowoff tube, as well. Judgement call, really.
