So I have been having some trouble with hitting my OG numbers as of late. Whether it be inefficiencies, a poor crush or what have you, I want to know if it is OK to correct the OG numbers in the last 5 mins of the boil by adding DME.

I know that this is normally done before you begin the boil, but I was wondering if this would have any effect on the beer if you had to make a quick correction.

Let me know, Thanks!

Adding DME anytime during the boil is fine, you can adjust the pre-boil SG or the "nearly post-boil" SG.
Either way you just have to do the math correctly...

Cheers!

How many times can you add DME before the cost of it adds up to the price of a Corona mill? If you have a mill you can have the same crush each time and hit your numbers easier.

I have to agree about grinding your own grains. I did one batch using the mill at morebeer showroom and got a terrible extraction efficiency.

Bought the barley crusher https://www.homebrewing.org/Barley-Crusher-Grain-Mill-7LB-Hopper_p_872.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvuDPBRDnARIsAGhuAmacQ-XVfKyqrtm7vsUv2GCqx1gSFDzI6J-E8XBT4surs26j8kPmaqoaAlI6EALw_wcB

Set it to the thickness of a normal credit card and my efficiency has been in the high 70's ever since. And that is using a batch sparge methodology.

The Rubber O ring which connects the two wheels will break off within the first 50# of grains. It isn't needed - the grains grab the wheels. I use a drill.
