A dumb idea for a burner wind shield

Just before ordering steel to construct this design for a burner wind shield, I came up with an idea that seems dumb but I think it might work. Instead of buying a sheet of 12 ga. stainless which would be kinda costly, what about using a dog bowl. The dog bowl is also stainless but is a little bit thinner. Im concerned about its ability to withstand heat. Shouldnt be much different than stainless plate thats only a little thicker though, all I have to do is cut the bottom out. Let me know what you guys think.

Don't see why that wouldn't work, might be a bit shallow though. One way to find out...

Your dog might piss in your beer though, so watch for that.

Let's see, that's a LG TV, Sony DVD, Wii...

The bowl seems small, and I think you would be unhappy with the result.

12ga seems a bit thick. If I remember right I used 2 pieces of 12"x18" 16ga, which only cost $10 each.

What does the stand look like, you might be able to get away just wrapping it in aluminum foil if you don't care about looks. Bonus, you can throw the foil away when it gets splashed with boilover.

The stand is real nice, Im making it out of all stainless and it is looking nice, I dont want to slap anything on it thats not stainless on it after paying rediculous money for it. 16 ga. would sound better actually. My stand is angle that the keg sits down into. I think I could come off the bottom of the angle with flatbar to the bent 16 ga. and hang the burner off that with more flatbar. Where did you get your stainless if you dont mind me asking?

if it fits right it will work, as long as it doesn't restrict oxygen or redirect heat in an undesirable manner, the wind shield doesn't have to stand up to full flame temps. thicker guage metal may last longer, but thats not definitive.

You would be surprised how much crap I have built that others insist must be bought.

Just remember how much the dog bowl cost, and is it really that much cheaper than getting what you actually want?

I think its a good idea, as stated, if the gap is right and fits the way you want it to then it should work out just fine. not sure what your cost savings would be tho.

I went through the same design and install learning curve for shielding burners. I started my experiment with old folgers tin coffee cans. They worked for nearly a year before crumbling to bits. I later replaced them with 6" schedule 40 black pipe which work better and should last a lifetime. Cheers

Sounds fine to me as long as the bowl is deep enough. For my current tower build I'm starting out with a couple of big coffee cans or #10 cans. What ever size works best I'll dig up something out of stainless later. At the bargin stores there are plenty of cheaply priced SS item that could easily be repurposed for a wind screen. My thoughts are a cheap SS cooking pot, SS countertop storage containers, or even a SS toilet brush keeper (new that is). These would all be way way cheaper than fabricating something out of SS sheet stock.
