5.5 Gallon Batch in a 6 Gallon Carboy?

I've fermented hundreds of 5.5 gallon batches in a 6 gallon carboy. Just make sure to use a blow off tube.
 
It could be done. You will need to control fermentation temperature so the yeast does not become over active, producing excessive krausen. You will also need to install a blow off tube before fermentation begins.

Scaling the recipe back to a smaller volume is also possible.
