38th Annual US Amateur Winemaking Competition (inc. Meads, Melomels, Pyments, Cysers)

Hi all!

We do have categories for Meads, Melomels, Pyments and Cysers as well.

For the past 37 years we've gotten only a few honey-based entries and this year we're really trying to get the word out.

The 2011 Cellarmasters 38th Annual US Amateur Winemaking Competition will be held on November 19, 2011.

Entries must be received between 10/14/2011 and 11//11/2011 at the Home Beer, Wine and Cheesemaking Shop in Woodland Hills, CA. (www.homebeerwinecheese.com)

Cellarmasters has been running this competition since the club was founded 38 years ago. The competition is an all-volunteer endeavor on our part and it's one of, if not the, oldest home wine competitions in the US.

Are the judges BJCP certified, or are there nationally recognized awards?

Hi Twofox, very good questions.

This is the US Amateur Winemaking Competition, now in it's 38th year. It's certainly not the biggest but it is the first and oldest national amateur wine competition in the US.

All of our judges are well trained. Some of our judges come from our sister club, The Maltose Falcons, but at this early point in time we can't say for sure which or how many will be BJCP certified.

All US Amateur entries will be judged on a slightly modified UC Davis Wine Judging 20 point scale.

This judging sheet is in some ways both similar to and in some ways different from the BJCP Mead judging sheet. But, as you would imagine, it's not nearly as Mead-specific.

The focus of the US Amateur is as much about the quality of feedback to the entrants as it is about awarding medals to the entries, and this judging sheet is designed with that in mind.
