Maybe just ovethinking this one, but ive been thinking about doing smaller batches to try out beer styles ive never had, and experiment in general. Will brewing a 2.5 gal batch (5 gal recipe halved) in a 3 gal carboy be okay? My question is about the excess headspace.
Thanks

Headspace will not be an issue. However, I second using a blowoff tube. Or, you could use a few drops of Fermcap to keep the krausen down. With a smaller batch, it'd be a shame to lose any beer as blowoff.

I have never had a problem with using a 3 gallon sized water jug or better bottle for a 2.5 gallon batch. Never needed a blowoff tube either. But it never hurts to have the fixins for one, just in case.

Okay guys thanks for the heads up. Ive got the blowoff tube, just may need a little adaptin...now to start choppin recipes.

Yep, it will work fine. I use a 3 gallon BB for my secondary with all my 2.5 gallon batches.
