Found this at the local food store, it was $1.99, and says its made of aluminium. The only part that worries me is the plastic thread holding the end together, I think I may boil it in water and see what happens.

Has anyone used anything similar?

Might work on leaf hops, not on pellets. As far as the plastic is concerned you could thread in some copper wire to hold it together or try crimping it and attaching a hose clamp.

I have a whirlpool set up in my new keggle, I didn't test it yet, I am still waiting for my first set of all-grain ingredients to arrive. Do I even need a strainer if I whirlpool?

Whirlpooling to set a nice cone in the center of the pot seems to work better with a flat bottom BK. In a keggle with the concave bottom it doesn't work for me. It just spreads across the bottom and doesn't cone.
