Well after many long years of wanting to homebrew, I finally broke down and bought some equipment. My first attempt is in the 2nd carboy, I didn't read around enough to find out that all the wort isn't supposed to go into the carboy to ferment, so needless to say there was alot of sediment at the bottom after all the activity stopped. about 2 inches on a 5 gallon carboy. Today I syphoned to a 2nd carboy, and left all the leftovers in the first. Is this salvagable? It smells good, I was going to let it set another week and give it a try. This was an american pale ale kit.

thanks

Large amounts of sedimentation wont hurt your brew, you should be fine! It is a process that will develop over time, all the little ways to minimise the trub that goes into the carboy. I, by no means, am free of junk at the bottom of my primarys, and have made some darn drinkable homebrews. I wouldent worry for a second about it if I was you... but I know when I was doing my first brew I worried about it too.

P.S.

Pour your wort through a sterile strainer on its way to your fermenter, it will help to remove a lot of the undesierable leftovers from the boil.

Whatcha gonna do with all that trub..all that trub...all that trub...

I don't think anyone should expect their first brew to be perfect. It's downright near impossible to do everything right the first time. It'll be fine, but future batches will be better.
