    Chemsan in finished beer

Hi everyone, new here. I’m on my second 1 gallon batch and messed up today. My siphon kind of stopped mid-way siphoning into my bottling bucket, so I filled it up with sanitizer again. I don’t know how, but I somehow managed to pour about 40-50ml diluted Chemsan into the wort before stopping...

    5 Do's And Don'ts For A New Brewer

    1. Do: Sanitize Everything Ok perhaps that's an exaggeration (http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/06/this-is-why-ill-never-be-adult.html) Sanitization is one of the most crucial parts of brewing a healthy beer. At best, an infection will cause some "interesting" sour flavors, and at...

    The Best Sanitizer for Homebrewers

Five Star's Starsan sanitizer has got to be the best sanitizer out there in my opinion. Why you may ask? For one, it's a no-rinse wet sanitizer. You can't do that with bleach. And like some others, it gives no discoloration. It works in as little as 15 seconds for small things like bottle caps...

    Replenish sanitizer in airlock?

Hi, I'm about 26 hours into fermenting my first batch of homebrew. The fluid in the airlock was bubbling nicely this morning, but when I checked in this afternoon I noticed that much of it had overflowed. Is this a problem and should I replenish it? Is there something I need to do to keep this...

    Step-san sanitizer

Has anyone used this? Advertised to be like Star-San only NO FOAM! Well, I've tried it and it is indeed less foamy but the smell....it is like an intense plastic smell. I have not used this on any of my brewing equipment for fear of this smell being imparted into my beer. I would be interested...

How long is PAA sanitizer good for after dilution?

I assume it will vary by brand, but how long is peracetic acid sanitizer likely to keep its strength after being diluted for use as a no-rinse sanitizer? I imagine it will go bad as the hydrogen peroxide degrades and the equilibrium balance ensures that there is also less PAA in solution. Has...

Cleaning New Spike CF10 Before 1st Use

As i anxiously await the arrival of my new Spike CF10 (TOMORROW!) - I'm wondering about cleaning and sanitizing before my first use. In all the excitement of the conical, temp control and other bells and whistles, I neglected to get a CIP ball. I don't want to let this thing sit idle any...

    DIY iodophor (povidone iodine)

Ordering liquids annoys me, since I always have to pay for shipping. I realized iodophor is sold as a powder, so I decided to make my own. This only makes sense if you want to make several gallons, or if you can get the powder in small quantity. Note that this is not the same as BTF Iodophor or...

    Adding surfactant to sanitizer

So I made my own iodophor*, and was wondering if this sanitizer (and all others) need a surfactant. When you shake up some sanitizer in your carboy or bottling bucket, it would be ideal if it coats the surface and keeps it wet. This is why Star San makes foam and teat dip (bulk iodophor for...

    Sanitizer Question

Hi All, I've heard things from friends but i wanted to run this by everyone on here. I have friends who swear that you can save the sanitizer for 2 weeks until you're ready to bottle (he stores it in a 5 gallon keg) and i've heard never to save sanitizer (at my local brew supply store). I guess...

    Star-San dillution tip

Star-San is diluted 1 fl/ 5 gal water. For me that is a lot of working strength sanitizer. I bought the smaller 8 oz bottle and lasts a long time, and here is what I do. 1 fl = 29.57353 ml so 1 gallon need 1/5 of this amount 29.57373/5 = 5.9147 ml. Round to 6 ml for the sake of convenience...
