Saw a 4-pack of 2006 Frederick Miller Classic Chocolate Lager on sale at my local grocery (Jewel Foods) and was intrigued enough to pick it up. It won a Bronze Medal at the 2006 GABF in the 'Herb and Spice Beer' category. Just poured it and here's my review:
Pours a fizzy, quickly dissapating head. No head retention at all! Aroma of chocolate dominates with roasted malt in the background. Color is a deep, clear brown, similar to a good Oktoberfest or Brown Ale. The best, most succinct way to describe the flavor?: Very similar to Young's Double Chocolate Stout, but with a thinner mouthfeel. Smooth, very drinkable and not as filling as Young's (tastes great-less filling!).
I'm mildly impressed with this MBC offering. Glad to see Dr. Ryder and crew pushing their normally constrained envelope.
