    Growing hops in southern california

I'm not local to you at all, but Great Lakes Hops sells crowns basically year round. I didn't check just now but I would imagine they've got 20+ varieties available this moment. They suggest fall for those of us in colder climates as being a great time to plant (which I'm not 100% sold on...

    planting hops in fall?

I actually *just* came inside from planting 5 new crowns at my new house. Going to hopefully transplant 5 others here soon as well. Great Lakes Hops actually suggests this as a great time of year to plant them. They're who I've gotten my last 6 (7 actually, counting a freebie!) plants from...

Below freezing temps on my new sprouts

My worry was for naught. This past Monday night was around 30 and Tuesday night was in the mid teens. Covered the in ground Columbus with a bucket and left the Fuggle in a bucket with just a mulch covering. Today the Fuggle has 4 shoots above the mulch (2-3" growth since planting on Sunday) and...

Below freezing temps on my new sprouts

Debated starting my own thread but it seemed like it wasn't really that worth it. I planted two new crowns (with sprouts) this past Sunday when it was close to 80 degrees - Columbus in the ground, and a freebie Fuggle in a 5 gallon bucket (by the way, thanks to Great Lakes Hops, you guys are...

    Growing Hops in Central Florida

It seems like Cascade will grow for just about anyone anywhere, so I think you probably gave yourself about the best chance you have of success right there. All I can tell you is the basics of hop growing - make sure they're in a well-drained location (or pot) but that they stay moist. They...

    2014 Hop rhizome Swap

This is a long shot but would anyone be interested in a Willamette crown/rhizome in exchange for a Chinook or Columbus crown or rhizome? I have a Willamette that has never produced for me in 6 years and I'm ready to replace it. Since I'm looking to replace I can remove nearly the whole rootstock...

    Should I replace...?

Should have Brandywine, Black Krim, Pompeii paste tomatoes, several varieties of cherry tomatoes, as well as a bunch of peppers - bell, jalapeno, cayenne, poblano, New Mexico, habanero, and possibly ghost chiles. Love gardening and growing tomatoes and peppers. :)

    Should I replace...?

Our soil here, to put it plainly, stinks. Heavy clay, drainage isn't great. However the location the hops are planted does not collect water when it rains and gets full sun nearly 100% of the day all season. Your experience kinda seems similar to what I've seen personally. I've also read...

    Should I replace...?

Hey all... I realize this is a rather difficult question to answer without really seeing my results, or knowing my area specifically. I planted 4 varieties (Cascade, Magnum, Mt. Hood, Willamette) in the spring of 2008. My support structure has been, should I say...lacking. Cheap metal arch...

    2014 Hop garden photo thread

Debated going outside today to check and see if any of my hops has broken through but I didn't bother. We've only in the past few days had consistent highs above freezing after a record snowy and cold winter. I love snow so I don't mind, but I can't wait to see my hops again this year and also...

    Using moldy hops?

FYI, and I know it sounds kinda gross...even if there ARE critters in there (bugs/insects I'm assuming you mean), I'd still just throw the bag straight in the freezer after sealing them up. They're going to suffocate/freeze to death either way.
