    Hops and Dogs

You should be able to train the bines to grow up the fence and along the top. Hops cones don't grow on the lower part of the bines.

    When to plant....

I planted Cascade, Hallertau and Nugget last year. The Hallertau didn't do too well and didn't come back this year. The Cascade and nugget do really well. I planted cuttings from the Cascade last year and those are doing really well too. All the Bines are between 3' and 4'.

    When to plant....

If you're planting in pots go ahead and do that now. They won't grow very high in a month. You can keep them in pots this season and transplant next spring.

    Somethings eating my leaves!

Could be a host of different bugs. Go out in the early morning and check the underside of the leaves. Ants won't eat the leaves, but they will be found around Aphids quite often. If you search online there are a quite a few different preventive oils, soaps, chemicals and homemade mixtures you...

    Rhizomes not growing

4 weeks is a little long for being so shallow. They may be slow to start though. You can always get some more while waiting for these. One can never have too many hop plants ;).

How deep did you plant them?

Broke off the top of my hop bines! Will they recover?

All the bines on all the plants were chewed off by some critter. Than the dog ran through some of them a month later breaking off the tips again. They grew new bines from the leaf nodes, but some did not flower. They were first year so I can't say if it was because they weren't established or...

Broke off the top of my hop bines! Will they recover?

When the tips get broken off the sidearms at the nearest leaf node start to grow. You should get two bines at that point maybe more from lower leaf nodes. This happened to me last year.

    Indoor growing

You can train hops to grow zig zag. They are related, but there some big differences. Hops are a perennial, it takes more than one season to mature. Marijuana is an annual that grows quickly and matures in one season. With some serious lights like metal halide or high pressure sodium at...

    I should RDWHAHB but....

If you want to drill now it won't hurt. If you can lift them up on cinder blocks or something and drill on the bottom I think that would work best. If not just try to get as low as possible on the sides.

    I should RDWHAHB but....

Do you see any water around the base when you water them? You could probably drill a few holes in the bottom if drainage is a problem. You shouldn't have to plug any holes you drill as long as the holes are not huge.

    Indoor growing

Hops need tons of light to grow. A window probably won't be sufficient. You may be able to grow them using high wattage lights. They need room to grow vertical or horizontal if trained. Bines can reach 25' in length, but they don't need too much space on the ground. You can grow them in pots...

    Rooting Hormone Safety

Is it safe to use Rootone on hop cuttings? I read in the FAQ at their site it shouldn't be used on fruits or vegetables.

hop rhizomes planted 2 weeks ago. nothing shooting up yet

It's worse replanting them at this point than not having planted them the best way possible. Hallertau are not as strong as some American varieties. They may take a bit longer to establish themselves. Relax, give them some TLC and they should be fine.

    Hop Specific recipes

The country/region the hops come from usually work well in quite a few styles from their home countries/regions. There are many exceptions to this rule, but it's a good place to start. What hops have you planted?

    Using a deck as trellis?

Yeah. Pretty much just nudging them to the right spot so they wrap around whatever you want them to.

    Using a deck as trellis?

Hops will grow around anything they can wrap around. When they reach the top they will grow laterally. They climb by wrapping around objects instead of tendrils. So they are not destructive like some vines.

    Columbus didnt come up?

They can take a few weeks to break ground. No need to worry. They only need to become established their first year. If they are a little behind it won't hurt them in the long run.

    Generic Garden Store "Hops"

The two most common ornamental hops are Humulus Japonica and Humulus lupulus 'Aureus'. It could also be a number of other varieties. It's really hard to identify the different strains. I would be hesitant to use them as well.
