    Where did I go wrong?

    Maybe the crush was bad

    Where did I go wrong?

Did you do a SG reading when the wort was hot? I plugged your grain bill into BeerSmith and it says your OG should be around 1.038 with the extra .25 gallon. I assumed you mashed at 152-155 for an hour.

    Thinking about getting a Grainfather...

This is what I use. It's more expensive than grainfather, but you won't grow out of it. Good luck with what ever you chose. https://brewhaequipment.com/products/biac-all-in-one-brewing-system-package

It's been said before: don't brew drunk!

Sounds like how I bowl :off:

It's been said before: don't brew drunk!

Lol, it's a component of brewing to me. That's why I don't brew in the morning, too early to start drinking. :)

Good enough, nice job. Now buy another fermenter and get another batch going.

As a home brewer, I wouldn't buy hop pellets in bulk, only buy what what your individual recipe demands. You will end up with a bunch of excess hops that you will be forcing yourself to use up. This is what can happen when one jumps into this without thinking through properly: I have a...

Even if you wanted to go to all grain in the near future, all that's left that you will need is a converted water cooler for a mash tun. You can sparge by hand or do what I did and use a turkey fryer pot (hot liqueur and sparge). This was my set-up for years before moving to electric.

The extract is just concentrated or powdered malt wort (2-row, etc) and all your doing is bypassing the mash step. You will still need to steep specialty grains and add hops. I don't think you will find any difference in the end result. This is not that easy and will require your full attention...

That kit looks solid and a great place to build on if you want to transition to all grain, good luck! You are now doomed like the rest of us. Here is a quote from the great John Palmer taken from "How to Brew" on extract brewing: "I should mention that Extract Brewing should not be viewed as...

Learn the process before investing in equipment. At this stage you have no idea what you want.

    Really high OG

Maybe you boiled off too much and looks like your at 7.3 vs 6.4 abv. US-05 will be fine. If it was my beer I wouldn't care and have a feeling it's going to be good. Here is a thread that talks about US-05 abv tolerance. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=131984

    Pro & Cons of Conicals

Conicals are vessels designed for brewing, and carboys and buckets are vessels that work for brewing. Conicals are less labor intensive for racking and cleaning carboys is a pain in the arse. Do conicals make better beer? No they don't. If your a newer brewer, I would stick with buckets and...

Another noob finishes his first kit

Don't be afraid to dive into all grain, it's not much more difficult and very rewarding. Here is the set-up that I used for years and wasn't expensive. It's not BIAB, but there are many advantages to this type of system and can be done on the stove top as well. I personally don't like handling...

Another noob finishes his first kit

That is exactly what I used for years before switching to electric. Works great and it's cheap.

    Secondary fermenter

In my opinion secondary fermenters are a complete waste of time and effort. I recommend keeping your processes simple and to an absolute minimum. Making truly great beer is much easier than you think regardless of experience.

Brewed first batch - few questions

Good input. I just migrated from years of conventional stovetop AG brewing (Mash using water cooler mash tun, batch sparge, etc.) to Brewha BIAC electric system. My instincts says to sparge for the reason you mentioned. How much water should one reserve for BIAC/BIAB? I read 1-2 quarts per...
