Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Well, the first few times I used Mr. Beer's instructions and it clearly states that it's a "no boil" recipe. That's the first issue. I'm thinking that by NOT boiling, you're opening yourself up to unwanted "nasties". And yes, maybe my sugar was "tainted" since I never use sugar for...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Very funny comic indeed! Actually Revvy you're the guy who supplied me with the most useful information back then! I sincerely appreciate all your help.

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

To answer the question about table sugar earlier........I had an infection EVERY time I used table sugar for priming (probably b/c table sugar is hygroscopic). Probably around 4 batches ruined by this method. Thanks to the suggestions from members here I started to boil the wort, and only...

Does Anyone Use All Dry Malt Extract?

I don't know why but I thought it was unusual to use all dry malt extract for an extract brew. Obviously, I'm still sort of "new" to this, it's only been a year for me. I will be using some steeping grains as well so that should help. I'm interested in how it will come out. So far, I've...

Does Anyone Use All Dry Malt Extract?

I have some left over ingredients that I want to use to make my next 5 gallon batch. I've never used dry malt extract before other than to make yeast starters. Is it possible to make a wort from entirely dry malt extract, no syrup at all?

So is that a picture of an infection or not?

How much yeast & DME do I use for 5 gallons?

I've been making yeast starters from dry yeast with awesome success. I don't mean to beat a dead horse but I amazed myself by making a starter last April from dry yeast and then re-viving it this spring and using it in my "Wooly Booger" Common Ale recipe. So far it tastes great (2ndary...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

I'm sure I've chimed in here a few times about my experiences with Mr. Beer. Whenever I followed the Mr. Beer - approved instructions, the results were terrible. I mean, out of 4 batches I think there were all of about 4 beer bottles that were, er, OK. Now, after some instructions from...

Need help with making a yeast Starter!

Wow, I'm really doing a lot of things "wrong" and still getting good results. I make a starter with dry LME and dry yeast at least 3 days before I'll be brewing. I use an airlock and "swish" the starter during the first 3 days - probably every 6/7 hours minimum. I just used a starter that...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Ha, I had the EXACT same thing happen to me (as you two, and probably many more) up until I got on here and Revvy set me straight. I stopped using the booster and I trippled the malt extract in the recipes - finally tasted awesome even with the crappy little yeast packet that comes with it...

    store star san in carboys

OK, you guys are going to love this one. I've been using the same Starsan for almost a year or more, no infections and, get this, it's cloudy. Ever since I listened to Charlie from 5 Star on that podcast I no longer dump the stuff for at least 4 or 5 months.

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

I've graduated from Mr. Beer to 5 gallon extract batches. I had terrible luck with Mr. Beer in the past. It was probably mostly due to using table sugar as priming sugar - per the Mr. Beer instuctions and me not knowing any better (prior to joining here). Revvy was a huge help to me when I...

    I'm Hooked!

I too am relatively new and it's a GREAT distraction from the busy life to focus on beer and the information and history of beer types as you make them. I just tasted my first 5 gallon batch that I brewed on 2/13/08 and it's INCREDIBLE. I can't get over just how good it is, it's not even...

    Airlock not secure. Problem?

Relax, Don't Worry Have A Homebrew (RDWHAHB) It's a ubiquitous expression by the famed "Joy of Hombrewing" author - Charlie Papazian. Incidentally, I tried the RDWHAHB on my pissed off wife the other day, and it's didn't work on her.

Solving for unknown F.G. - algebra

I'm trying to use the remainder of my Mr. Beer extracts and Mr. Beer doesn't provide you with SG readings on their recipes. So, Here's the thing. My OG was 1.046 and I can GUESS my final ABV at 5.05% based on the ingredients used and the handy-dandy Mr. Beer chart that shows what each...

Solving for unknown F.G. - algebra

Let's get right to the chase...... If I know my O.G. and I know my approximated final ABV% - I should be able to solve for the unknown - which in this case is the F.G. You see, I don't have a recipe for this batch but I was able to calculate the approximate final ABV by adding up the...

    5/16" or 1/2" auto siphon for 6.5 G carboy

Please forgive the noobs questions but I'm about to place an order for an auto-siphon and want to be sure I get the right thing. If I'm going to be siphoning out of my 6.5 G glass carboy (primary) into a 5 G glass carboy for secondary - would it be easier with the larger 1/2" auto-siphon...

Method of measuring F.G. from primary

Sweet, are you kidding me? I'm so amped about tasting it I might have to start drinking my beer from a graduated cylinder just to replicate the excitement again! Thanks for your fast answer!
