    Oatmeal Stout Recipe Help

A few days ago this problematic beer turned even wilder. I had my first primary overflow. Out the airlock and sides, quite a mess. I sanitized the lid, cleaned up the mess and switched to a blowoff tube. Anyway... After racking to the secondary and tasting a small sample everything is...

    Oatmeal Stout Recipe Help

Well the brewing is done and I have to say it was a tough one. With the oatmeal in the grains I felt like a sparging animal. Eventually I stopped keeping track of how much sparging water I was using. This then brought my boil a lot higher than expected.(I had to split it into a second pot)...

    Oatmeal Stout Recipe Help

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I have a good idea of what to do now but I do have two more quick questions. 1 - Will '1oz of cluster hops 60 minutes' and '1oz of fuggles 3 minutes' work? 2- I only have Quaker "Quick" oats. I've heard that they work but are not ideal. How do I...

    Oatmeal Stout Recipe Help

Don't know alpha's, fermentation temps are about 65-70. I'm not sure what you need to know about the water. I'm using about 16 liters in the boil.

    Oatmeal Stout Recipe Help

I am very limited to what ingredients I can get, but have come up with the following to try and make an oatmeal stout. (I really like St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout) Pale LME - probably going to use 6-8lbs. Any advice? Crystal Malt (?Lovibond) - going to use 1lb. (I have 3lbs) Choc. Malt -...

    LME volume/weight ?

One more question. I've been thinking about it and I think that the density you gave me was the density of the LME when combined with water. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm not, please, if someone knows, tell me the density of Pale LME.

    LME volume/weight ?

Thanks for your help everyone. XCmerk, was that 4.56 lbs per liter or 2 liters. I could do the math myself but I want to brew sometime before the weekend is over.

    LME volume/weight ?

I know that it is difficult to convert volume to mass but I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. The place where I buy my LME (I'm there only homebrewing customer) sells it to me in 2 litre containers. I've tried to find out the approximate density of LME and convert it and have come up with...

    Style question

That's true. I use a long handled spoon to stir it, but it's a couple of inches from the top so I really can't mix it vigorously. Any advice on how to mix it better, or get a sample from lower in the pail? I've tried using a baster and it doesn't work well. (also, I never trust how sanitized...

    Style question

I was surprised with the OG too. I'm starting to wonder if my hydrometer is a bit off. It measures water at 1000 but my lastest batch of beer was also under 1040 and it should have been a bit higher. Can you recommend a particular type of hydrometer and a thermometer that I can use for steeping.

    Style question

Thanks for the replies. I used the hydrometer to measure the OG. The yeast was Munton's Premium Gold. The guy told me that his ingredients weren't very fresh but I really had no other options. The crystal malt wasn't labeled so I really can't tell what it was. The boil size was about 2.5-3...

    Style question

I made my first non-kit beer about 5 weeks ago and bought my ingredients from a guy who had a bunch of stuff in his basement. I'm really happy with the beer but it is not very close to the style I was attempting to make. The recipe was, 6.6lbs Amber LME 1.5lbs crystal malt 1oz cascade...

    St. Ambroise Pale Ale

I'm quite new to brewing and would like to try and brew something that is as close as possible to my favourite APA. If any of you are familiar with St. Ambroise Pale Ale and have some advice on how to brew something that may be close to it, please let me know. I'm still brewing using extract...
