    Pre-boil and post-boil gravity don't add up...?

Hey - yeah, if you are taking gravity samples along the way make sure you temperature correct them. Brewfather's estiamtes will be based on room temperature, so if it says your expected pre-boil gravity is 1.040, it means for a hydrometer calibrated to 68F and for a sample measured at 68F. If...

Help deciding what to do with sparge

Good to know. I've at least seen that the crush from Nothern Brewer was much better than MoreBeer. The grains from MoreBeer had many whole, uncracked grains.

Help deciding what to do with sparge

I feel like it's the only thing that can explain the terrible efficiency I got on this brew, I've never seen such bad numbers with the same exact process.

Help deciding what to do with sparge

So, I ended up doing 1.5 qt/lb with a pretty light sparge. In retrospect, I should have done 1.25 qt/lb. Anyway, I ordered the grains crushed by MoreBeer because I'm at my parents house for the holidays and my dad doesn't have a mill. The crush was pretty terrible honestly. I ended up with the...

Help deciding what to do with sparge

That's an awesome idea, thanks for sharing!

Help deciding what to do with sparge

That's what I figured, but brewfather tells me I would have a 9.42 gallon total volume grains+water with no sparge and brewfather has never been wrong for me before. The mash tun has a very small dead space since it uses a braided hose instead of false bottom. I'll probably meet in the middle...

Help deciding what to do with sparge

I'm gonna brew a more beer kit with a 10 gallon cooler mash tun and turkey fryer set up. Its a 15 pound grain bill. With my normal numbers (brewfather), this would give me 6.75 gallons mash water and 1.5 gallon sparge water. This is with ~1.75 quarts per gallon mash. Anyway, 1.5 gallons is not...

    Pre-boil and post-boil gravity don't add up...?

    Indeed sir, you were correct!

    Pre-boil and post-boil gravity don't add up...?

Last night I brewed a Timothy Taylor's Landlord clone. Everything went pretty spot on as planned but the OG came out low and I don't understand why. Using BrewFather, I had an estimated pre-boil volume of 7.9 gallons, post-boil volume of 6.5 gallons, pre-boil gravity of 1.036, and post-boil...

    Partial mash and then steep?

Hi all, I've never done a partial mash before, but have done many all grain batches and a few extract. I don't currently have the capacity for all grain, but I'd like to make this recipe: https://homebrewsupply.com/goose-island-bourbon-county-stout-clone-all-grain-recipe-kit/...

    Sparge Temperature for 2 Rinses?

from my experience when I've drained full speed my extraction was horrible, and when I've drained slowly my extraction was excellent

    Sparge Temperature for 2 Rinses?

So drain the first running at 1 qt/minute, and once I sparge drain full flow and I will get the same efficiency?

    Sparge Temperature for 2 Rinses?

Really? If this is true this would really cut down on my brew time, but I would be really cautious to even try it. How can full speed be sufficient enough to rinse all the sugar?

    Sparge Temperature for 2 Rinses?

For the batch I did Friday night I only had 7 and 1/4 lbs grain and 1 lb honey. Aimed for a ratio of 1.50 qts/lb but, as has been happening to me a lot (despite heating mash tun), initial temp came out too low - 148. Took 3 quarts to get it to 152 surprisingly. This brought my ratio up to 1.9...

    Sparge Temperature for 2 Rinses?

I think for tonight I am going to use brewheads sparge calculator and just go with a mashout...see how it comes out.

    Sparge Temperature for 2 Rinses?

Yeah that makes sense. I am not really looking to do a mash out...I have just been lead to believe that raising the mash temperature to 168 when you sparge will result in the highest extraction. But I do see what you are saying raise it to 168 with the first rinse and maintain it at 168 with the...

    Sparge Temperature for 2 Rinses?

I am using http://www.brew365.com/mash_sparge_water_calculator.php for my mash and sparge calculator, I have compared it with some others and it has been fairly reliable for me so far. For the batch I am doing it calculates a sparge volume of 5.16 gallons. Normally I would add this volume at...
