Does anyone start to heat up their first runnings while they are batch sparging?

I didn't say you did. What you did is caution against a hypothetical that doesn't reflect how people batch sparge, generally speaking. I could offer that the OP's beer may under attenuate if he pitches his yeast before he collects his full volume. That also wouldn't be describing how to batch...

Does anyone start to heat up their first runnings while they are batch sparging?

I've never heard of batch sparging being done the way you describe. I don't add bittering hops until after I've collected my full volume and until after it's come to a boil so this would never be a problem for me.

Does anyone start to heat up their first runnings while they are batch sparging?

I used to have a problem with my beers attenuating too much. Once I started heating the first runnings right away they usually attenuate right in line with the yeast manufacturer's estimates.

Pilsner Malt - Max % Without 90 Min Boil

This weekend I'll keg a Munich Helles that's 90% Weyermann Pilsner. For the first time, I only did a 60 min boil. I haven't picked up any DMS so far. Not sure if that means I'm in the clear or if I'll have to wait and judge once I tap the keg.

    Mash Tun Temp Help

Given that your system/process gave consistent results 20 times and then suddenly changed makes me also think something is up with your cooler. Look for small cracks in the plastic or leaks around your bulkhead. If it were me, even if I couldn't spot an obvious problem, I probably would just buy...

    Fly vs Batch

    What Bobby M said.

    Fly vs Batch

I dunno, I think they both have tradeoffs. I have a 5-gal system and I definitely prefer to batch sparge, but I don't think I would call it "hands down superior."

How do you calculate grain weights based on percentages?

An easy way to do it, assuming you use software, is to multiply each % by 10, enter these amounts as pounds and then use a conversion tool that will adjust these amounts proportionately until you reach your target OG based on your batch size and efficiency. So for your recipe, you would enter...

5 gallon cooler vs. 10 gallon cooler

I had been using a 5-gal cooler for a couple years and just switched to a 10-gal cooler last weekend. I noticed two big improvements. First, I was able to stir the mash better since it wasn't filled up nearly to the top. And second, I was able to run off the mash and sparge water more quickly...

Pilsner Malt - Max % Without 90 Min Boil

Interesting stuff. I've also tended to avoid pils-heavy recipes because I didn't want to do a 90-minute boil. I may reconsider.

Whirlfloc - should I switch to something else?

    Yeah, everyone into the pool.

Whirlfloc - should I switch to something else?

This thread came up in a search and I nearly read through the entire thing before I realized I was the OP.... (And nope, I haven't had anything to drink yet today.) Anyway, I figured I would post a follow-up since I've fixed my hazy beer problem. I still use whirlfloc and cold crash in the...

Whirlfloc - should I switch to something else?

I guess it could be yeast. At this point, I'm not sure. Here are some more details about my process: I use a Blichmann floor burner so I'm able to get a good hot break. I use an immersion chiller and usually am able to drop the wort from boiling to 70F in ~20 minutes. The wort in my kettle...

Whirlfloc - should I switch to something else?

Does it even make sense to use Whirlfloc if I'm just going to dump everything (except hops) from my kettle into my fermenter? I use it every time I want a beer to be clear, and I still get chill haze that usually takes a week or two to get rid of. I'm starting to wonder if I should switch to...

whats your mill gap setting (barley crusher)

I was getting ~72% at the 0.39 factory setting doing batch sparges with a SS braid. I tightened to 0.35 and my efficiency improved to 78% and 81%, but I also had a stuck sparge each time. I've loosened it to 0.37 so hopefully I'll get ~75% and fast runoffs. I'll know in a couple weeks.

Best extract only recipe for an all grain guy

Not real exciting, but a hefeweizen (or an American wheat) is the first thing that comes to my mind. Most wheat extracts are 60% wheat 40% pale, or maybe 65% and 35%, and you don't have to mess with a protein rest or a 90 min boil. Just add enough extract to reach your target OG, noble hops at...

Batch Sparge Volumes. Not Understanding Needed Volumes

What I do is heat my strike water ~15 degrees hotter than my mash temp and add it to my cooler for 15 minutes before adding my grain. On my system I've found that the water will drop ~5 degrees during the 15-minute preheat period and then it will drop another ~10 degrees once I add the grain...

    HEEEEELP!!!! Emergency

Sure, and simply wanting and/or believing something to be true doesn't make it so. (I assume your atheist friends were able to knock the stitches off your softball.)

Is my mash braid too long?

I get about 75% with my Barley Crusher set at the factory spacing (0.39, I think), so it's not exactly a serious problem from that standpoint. More of a fine tuning issue. My mash paddle often hits it and moves it around quite a bit, and I see the wort funneling over to the end of the braid...

Is my mash braid too long?

Guys, thanks for the input. I think I'll leave it alone for now. If anything, I may somehow attach a SS coupling or something to the end to weight it down.
