    electric brewing question

I brew all electric. I have two 220V running off the distro block. Both of those are wired to female receptables mounted near/under the appropriate kettle. Each one is controlled by a PID/Thermo/SSR relay. And I use them both at the same time with no problem. First time I tried it I was...

    Garage Needs a brew rig...

It is a fun system to play with. Gives great flexibility in any weather to keep exactly the temps we need for mashing. The electric is far superior to gas in many ways (noise, cost, effeciency, safety) too!

    Garage Needs a brew rig...

Construction is well under way. Plan9 and I had a big day yesterday. We installed the bulkheads and pick up tubes, we got two of the elements in. Hooked up the pump. We temporarily set up the PID/SSR/Element combo. It was working pretty well. Took about an hour to get the water from 72 to...

    Garage Needs a brew rig...

With electric elements inside the kettles water will act as a conducter. The metal will never be in direct contact with heat, so the kettles shouldn't get over 250 at any point. That is well within the safe limit for wood. I was concerned about it at first, but I just don't see any real reason...

    Garage Needs a brew rig...

Sounds good. I think this afternoon I will screw around with the PIDs a little, see if I can get them to turn on lightbulbs and stuff like that. I thought I took the SSRs off my order, but I didn't! A lot of other stuff will arrive today, then we just have the last order from mcmaster. OH...

It is a 7.5. It is perfect for fermenting in. But I never know if it is clean in there. I am glad you think my keg is cute.

Construction on my rig has started. I am going to go all electric. That will allow me to build with wood without concern over burning down the garage. My first pictures of the build.

Parts list - Did I miss anything

Sub panel will be wired from a 50A GFI breaker. I think I am going to weld my fittings. I can pick up the nipples real cheap. And welding just looks like so much fun!

Parts list - Did I miss anything

I will be running 50A to the brew rig. From there I think i will step through a subpanel. My home has 400 or 500 amp service. The detached garage has 100. Not sure what the home builder was planning for, but he gave me plenty of juice! I am fully aware that you can not run a 110V @ 220V...

Good information. Thanks! You interested in coming to a BBQ and tasting this weekend? Five or six guys and our wives are going to be there. I am hosting it here.

How much cheaper, anyone run the numbers? And how much slower? I have the propane cooker already. That is about the only reason that is holding me back from going all electric.

I looked online yesterday and found a scrap yard very close to where I work. Thanks for the .30/.40 per pound quote. That will give me a good baseline to work from!!
