One book to rule them all

The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian, was the first and most entertaining and informative book wrt my embryonic home brewing endeavors. That was followed closely by How to Brew by John Palmer - look for the latest edition (4th, iirc) as the version I read was the on-line...

What I did for beer today

1318 over-build line restart, 2nd step... Ferment out and a hard crash, should be ready to brew something in a couple of days... Cheers!

Why didn't anyone ever tell me to buy a grain mill sooner

fwiw, we've always had a 28000~29000 BTU through-wall unit in one of the larger 2nd story rooms in our house and definitely had to run the condensate drain line to keep it from splashing back on the siding downstairs. But the last time we replaced it, the new unit advised that there wasn't a...

    Small recipe bagging

I agree it's not necessary to vac-bag grain kits, and I would not recommend doling out hops in advance - keep those in the freezer sealed in their factory bags and measure out what's needed on brew day... Cheers!

Why didn't anyone ever tell me to buy a grain mill sooner

I think a mill is right behind "temperature controlled fermentation" in the hierarchy of things to have :) Cheers!

What I did for beer today

Kegged ten gallons of my imperial chocolate stout. From an OG of 1.106 to an FG of 1.018, this batch came in at 11.55% ABV and is full of chocolatey goodness  Cheers!

    Small recipe bagging

"Glad" might offer even larger reusable containers... fwiw, a quick test showed a pound and a quarter of malted barley occupies roughly a quart of volume. We have some 76 ounce containers that comfortably fit 3 pounds of malt - that would make for a pretty big one gallon beer :) Cheers!

    Small recipe bagging

Uncrushed grains, I hope. There are reusable Ziploc lidded plastic containers that can fit the 2~3 pounds of grains for a 1 gallon batch... Cheers!

    Got my first infection.

Ugh. Speaking of "nuke it from orbit", this thread is pretty much there. I've heard about that maggot infested "cheese". So gross! I can't imagine the mental gymnastics that gets someone to indulge 😳

All NEIPA recipes taste the same

fwiw, I've been brewing hazies since 2016 (Heady Topper clone was my first) and started with dry hopping twice as much (two rounds) but found if I switched from using flaked to malted adjuncts (oats and wheat) the haze persistence and hop character intensity both matched up with commercial...

Anyone know if reverse-osmosis home systems can eliminate PFAS?

The conservative approach is assume the worst of those numbers could come through your feed line. Might consider getting an opinion on the best mitigation approach from HBT member Russ @Buckeye_Hydro as there are actually a few other methods of breaking down and/or removing PFAS molecules. For...

All NEIPA recipes taste the same

fwiw, in 2024 I consolidated my hazy IPA hop schedule to this: - I typically use Chinook or CTZ for a T60 bittering addition - 1 ounce of each character hop at T5 - 2 ounces of each character hop for a 20 minute 170°F post-boil whirlpool - post fermentation two day "soft crash" to 50°F - 2...

All NEIPA recipes taste the same

I've never used Nectaron but I use lots of Mosaic and Amarillo every year, and that combination looks favorable to me. One of these days I'm going to give Nectaron a try... https://beermaverick.com/hops/hop-comparison-tool/ Cheers!

    to mash or steep?

Can't generalize "zero DP/Lintner = steep" as there are grains with little to no diastatic power that can have their starches converted to fermentable sugars if other grains provide the saccharification enzymes. So you have to subset that generalization to find the grains that have no DP but...

What I did for beer today

To make a very long story shorter, I had major surgery on my right leg 5 weeks ago and this morning my surgical team finally said I can start "doing stuff" as long as it didn't stress my leg. I had planned on the surgery and recovery and had brewed six 10 gallon batches of beers to get me...

Anyone know if reverse-osmosis home systems can eliminate PFAS?

Yes, one or two Activated Carbon filters followed by a Reverse Osmosis membrane is probably one of the few effective methods. This page was inspired by PFAS water problems in Minnesota...
