Do you keep the beer labels or bottle caps from the interesting brews you've tried?

I used to keep bottles, but they just took up way too much room - so now I have a bucket on top of the beer fridge that I toss a cap in. One day I might organize them according to color and make a mosaic mural with a beer-related image (my Starr bottle opener puts only a small dimple in the...

What kind of water do you use?

I use the tap water I have never had a problem with it and it makes excellent beer so I've never felt the need to fiddle with the chemistry.

    Adding priming sugar

I lay down a blanket of CO2 on top of the priming bucket before adding the priming sugar and giving it one turn of the spoon. The theory is that this will make oxygenation less likely. Have not heard of this Kremyx before - would like to hear about anyone's experience. Having always had...

    Glass primary?

prevent breaking carboys while moving them around! I have a plastic milk crate for each of my carboys and always keep the carboy in the crate except while cleaning - this prevents anything from banging against them. Also, never ever pick up a full carboy by the neck - those carboy handles are...

    (Mis)Adventures In Homebrewing

I can't tell you what it was, exactly, but somehow, I managed to get her to buy the cajun cookers in defense of her own stove. On the one occasion when I had a severe boilover, my honey was at work. I figured I did a really dandy job of cleaning it up - had the stove sparkling. When she...

    Bottle labels off...

as to containing any mess, I keep a pile of clean old towels handy and put them down as a kind of absorbent carpet when doing any transfer. a bottling suggestion - get a bottling cane. It does a LOT to simplify the process at a very reasonable price.

    Air Space When Bottling

the books say one inch of headspace is about right too much headspace is evidently asking for pressure problems. I have never had a problem, but I generally drink that partial bottle while I am cleaning up - that way I never have a problem. It is like a little promise of what will be...

is it ok to ferment in priming container

While it is preferable to use glass for your secondary, plastic will work fine, especially if you do not leave the beer in the secondary very long.

    adhering labels

I use an ordinary glue stick - the labels wash right off in warm water. Of course, if you drop the bottles in a cooler and they get wet, the labels tend to come off prematurely - so I always put a little round sticky label on the cap so nothing ends up unidentifiable. Both the glue stick...

    Bottle labels off...

I use the dishwasher on the "sani heat" setting to sterilize clean bottles - this will not do much for bottles which are not clean except maybe bake on some stuff you should be cleaning out. I have never had a problem with infection as a result of this practice.

    Hops Growing

The Homebrewer's Garden by Joe and Dennis Fisher is a great source of information about growing your own hops. They include information about watering, soil pH, where to site your hopyard, how to make trellising and good information on various pests and diseases you may have to deal with...

    Bottle labels off...

Some of those really hard-to-remove labels respond well to a soaking in a solution of washing soda. You will have to wash the bottles after to get rid of the soda, which does not rinse off easily.
