    Hops Direct has great prices on hops, especially if you are willing to use prior year hops. Another cost saver is either using dry yeast, or washing and reusing your yeast. I buy my grains at LHBS, but I used to get cheap sacks of 2 row at a local brewery before they closed.

    Pitch temperature when pressure fermenting?

    I usually pitch at 80 and ferment in a 65 degree basement. I primarily use S04 and US05.

    All you can do is laugh....

    Last weekend I was chilling my brew with an immersion chiller. I normally use 25 gallons to cool 10 gallons, and I was at 30 gallons and it wouldn’t cool past 130 degrees. I had my hose hooked to the hot tap instead of the cold tap.

    Would cold brewed coffee inhibit yeast starting?

    I’d be more worried about infection. I always dump the coffee in at the end of the boil.

    What I did for beer today

    Hung the last of the drywall in my basement brewery tonight. I’ll mud this weekend but can’t sand for a while. Wife has COVID so I’m sleeping in a hammock in the basement brewery…don’t want to sand mud while I’m sleeping there. Also finished developing a new IPA recipe for Saturday.

    Best beginner's book

    I was in the same boat a couple weekends ago. I only brewed 5 gallons instead of 20, kept a simple hop schedule, and didn’t get into the minute details. He was curious about the pH meter and hydrometer though. I’ve lent out my 20 year old copy of palmers book numerous times.

    What do you do with the spent grain (from your mash)??

    I put them about 30 yards from my garage and the deer eat them within a couple days. I’ve dumped them after the mash and deer have been eating them when I cleaned my BK.

    Best Way to Install Airlock Grommet in Bucket Lid

    I have some lids with grommets that work fine. I have some with 1" or so holes that take a carboy bung. The great thing about those is that you can pull them and take a quick gravity sample with a turkey baster with minimal O2 intrusion. That's old school 2005 technology right there.

    My first brew I primaried in a 5 gallon filled to the neck with a S airlock, just like I did for wine. The next morning my ceiling, walls, and floor were covered in wort. I hadn’t heard about krausen yet.

    What I did for beer today

    Wired in a couple of outlets in my basement brewery. I hope to get a couple of sheets of drywall hung tomorrow.     Best beer you can't make again?

    I booted up the computer from a thumb drive, and was able to get on the C drive and transfer files to the thumb drive. Some of the files were missing. It’s a handy trick. I learned it when my kid fell for the ransom ware scam.

    I had a backup drive that I learned after the fact was not backing up several of my folders including that one. I was able to fire it up with windows on a thumb drive. I got my wife’s stuff, but my BeerSmith files were gone. It was version 1 so no cloud backups.
