2 liter oak barrels, whiskey optional

I agree. Looks like I may have found a new source.

2 liter oak barrels, whiskey optional

I just happened across this website. They are basically selling white whiskey and a 2L barrel to age it in. 2L sounds about perfect to me for oak aging some barleywine or an RIS. It doesn't look like the barrels are available for order yet, but I, for one, put my email on their mailing list for...

Who has a fire extinguisher near their brewing setup?

Yep. I keep it within reaching distance anytime I have the propane turned on in the garage. That reminds me I need to check the date.

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

Anybody have a recipe ready for their new toy yet? I'm thinking go big with the aroma hops for the first time using it. Recipe: Hopback IPA Style: American IPA TYPE: All Grain Recipe Specifications -------------------------- Batch Size: 6.50 gal Boil Size: 8.54 gal Estimated OG: 1.070 SG...

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

I think the calculation is essentially 0 IBUs from the hopback. You are not boiling the extracted oils from the hops, so you are not isomerizing the alpha acids the way you would in the kettle. You are definitely getting some hop aroma and flavor, but none of that counts towards IBUs. I...

How much does your plate chiller weigh?

Henrythe9th, that's a pretty hefty setup. Were you finding that one 30 plate chiller wasn't bringing the wort temp down fast enough? How cold is your cold water?

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

A counter-flow chiller would work just as well. I like my plate chiller, but I thought I'd mention it.

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

I haven't, I use a plate chiller. I'm not sure a hopback would get you much over late addition hops in this case. The way I understand it, the hopback lets you get the hop aroma and flavor into the hot wort just prior to chilling it. Since both systems have controlled inputs and outputs, you...

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

I considered the b3 one a few times, but I think it will have the same problems my home-made one has. Particularly in that it probably won't hold much pressure. They recommend the pump after the hopback which strikes me as a way to burn out your pump. Blichmann rightly recommends the pump in...

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

Gotcha. A stand would be a good idea. I'll probably just set it in an empty container. Actually, I think it would fit well in my current leaky, cloggy hopback.

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

I thought it looked pretty straight forward. The top piece with the finer mesh was floating around in the beginning part of the video because he hadn't put any hops in. It looks to me like it would go together pretty smoothly. Also, it comes apart well enough to get a good wash.

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

Yeah. I'll be getting one for primary use as a hopback between the boil kettle and the chiller. I love the idea of locking in those hop aromas after the boil. I'm guessing it will be used as a randal once or twice just so I can say I did it. $100 or so is what I was guessing too. I hate to...

    Blichmann Hop Rocket

Has anyone seen this yet? I didn't see anything in a search. http://www.youtube.com/user/NorthernBrewerTV#p/search/0/FEO75CszMcI It is a Blichmann hopback/filter/randal. I haven't had much luck building my own hopback, too many leaks and clogging, but this looks awesome. Guess I know what...

found this in my garage. worth anything?

You could use it for an apple press as well. Unfortunately, if its been sitting that long, it is not only useless, it is toxic. You are going to have to ship it to Colorado where we have a specialized dumping ground for toxic fruit presses. As a favor, I'll let you ship it to me and I'll...

    Brewballs? Look kinda cool

I've considered these too from time to time. Apart from not being able to see through the kreusen, I also have a hard time seeing through my better bottle after the kreusen has left scum all over it. Not with every batch, but with enough that I skipped getting these. I like the refractometer as...

I dont need any stinking bung or stopper!

Looks like a good seal to me. The only concern I would have would be that the kreusen overwhelms the bubbler and you get some goo in the silicone. That sits for a week or so and gets a little mold on it. When you pull the airlock out, some of that mold could drop into the beer and start an...

Gaaah! The probe fell out of the freezer!

I'm sure its not the worst thing they will ever do, just the worst thing they did this weekend. Yeah, I'll just grit my teeth a bit and relax. They didn't know what they were doing. And it's not like I won't enjoy brewing up a replacement batch.

Gaaah! The probe fell out of the freezer!

So, there I am thinking fermentation is going along nicely. I went to check and see how it was going Saturday night. I pop open the freezer and what do I see? Beer Ice everywhere. I'm guessing one of the kids got the temperature probe cord caught on their bike handlebars and pulled it out of the...

    Cheap Brew Pot?

I think the OP post was for 80qt at $56.25. I would go for that over saving $11. I do 10 gallon batches. After bumping up to 11 gallons to account for racking loss, bumping for temperature volume loss, bumping for hop absorption, and bumping for evaporation over 90 minutes, I am boiling 14.4...
