    All-Grain Kits?

Is this similar to the Great Vowel Shift? (of the 15th to 18th centuries) :)

    All-Grain Kits?

Just thought I would give this thread a bump...it deserves it! I brewed an slightly modified version of it: 57% 10.5 lbs. American Two-row Pale 19% 3.5 lbs. Rye Malt 8% 1.5 lbs. Rye, Flaked 8% 1.5 lbs. American Munich 4% .75 lbs. American CaraPils 4% .75 lbs. American Wheat...

    Inconsistency between refractor and hydrometer

I can't speak for all refractometers, but mine would disagree.

    Inconsistency between refractor and hydrometer

Regardless of the automatic temperature correction, I have noticed the gravity will change as the sample cools. I put the wort on the prism, lower the flap, and then let it sit for a few minutes before taking the reading. My refractometer measures in Brix so I use this to convert: Fermsoft -...

    Hydrometer correction factor

I absolutely meant refractometer...oops! I did calibrate with distilled water. I let it sit for at least 60 seconds because I have noticed, based on the temp of the wort I put on, that the gravity will generally get higher as it cools to room temp even with ATC. It actually should not...

    Hydrometer correction factor

I didn't know you needed to figure a correction factor for your hydrometer until after doing some reading here. Have done this for a couple batches now and mine seems to be about 93%. Meaning, whatever I read on the hydrometer, after I let it sit for a few mins to cool, I multiple by .93 to...

    Barley Crusher, which size?

I was thinking a real man wouldn't need a stinking hopper, he would just punch the grain until it was crushed to perfection. I hear Chuck Norris can crush grain under the pressure of his intense stare.

    Barley Crusher, which size?

I have the 7 lb. hopper not only to save a few bucks but because it can be tucked away easier when not in use. I find stopping for 30 seconds to refill a nice break for me and the cordless drill.

Cheap way to strain pellet hops our of brew kettle?

Right on! The easiest way to not get hop pellet junk into the fermenter is to not suck them up in the first place. Near the end you just have to make the call which is more important, do you want that extra wort with some break and hop material or do you leave it behind.so you don't get it in...

    Johnson Controls thermostat issue

Sounds like you have the differential setting set at 5 degrees. I have mine set at 1. Say my set point is at 66 and I have it in cooling cut-in mode. When the temp hits 66, my fan turns on in my son of fermentation chiller which cools the wort down. When the temp hits 65 it cuts off and...

Thoughts...2 or 3 roller grain mill???

Same here on the smaller hopper. Crushed 15 lbs. of grain yesterday in about 5 mins with two refills, of course used a drill hooked to it which made it so very easy.

    Let's Talk Stirplates

Not at all, the vinyl tubing I put it in is food safe. I just sterilize it with the jug before making the starter.

    Let's Talk Stirplates

Just out of curiosity, have you tried to use a magnet as a stir bar? When I made my stir plate I used one magnet on the fan and the other as the stir bar (put it into some vinyl tubing and sealed it) and it is able to spin a starter in my 1 gallon glass jug without an issue.

    Advice on Heating Fermenter

I built a son of fermentation chiller to keep the beer fermenting cool in the summer. In the winter I use it for it's insulation properties and hook a Fermwrap heater up to my temp controller. Works like a charm, holds the beer at whatever temp I want within a degree.

    Barley Crusher WOW

I used my BC for the first time on my last batch. I had been using 70% efficiency which is what I was getting with my online crushes from various places. I adjusted the crush to .035 and crushed away. Efficiency jumped to 85%! I boiled it down a little less so I didn't end up with a...

What Magnets/Stir Bar do you use for your Stir Plate?

I just used the other magnet from the hard drive as a stir bar. Shoved it into a piece of vinyl tubing and then cut and sealed the ends of the tubing with pliers and a lighter. Works great.

    You got it.

Burner on wood deck? Steam in the house?

I BBQ and use the turkey fryer to boil wort on my wood deck. I'm much more worried about stains from a spill than anything catching fire. Not sure what kind of turkey fryer some people use, but even if tipped the flame would not touch the deck, not to mention 5-8 gallons of wort hitting it.

Illegitimate Son of a Fermentation Chiller

This is cool to see, I was actually thinking how I was going to ferment my next batch. I measured my mini-fridge and it was not going to work so I started to think about how to jimmy something up. Glad other have already trod where I planned on going! :)
