    Keg Co2 Off Flavor

seminoleAle, No, I don't carb through the liquid fitting, but through the gas fitting. I carb like many do, 30 psi, swirl the keg about for a while until I get tired, then let it sit under that pressure for 24 h, then put in fridge to cold crash. I usually carb at room temperature, some do...

    Keg Co2 Off Flavor

Do you purge the air from the keg before filling it? You may have an issue with oxidation as well as young beer flavors. If you haven't purged the oxygen with CO2, you are allowing the beer to suck up oxygen from the air as you fill the keg. I purge my cornies by connecting the CO2 line...

    Crack in Mash tun

This adhesive is not for polypropylene, it is designed for ABS,PVC and CPVC, according to the webpage. Plastics are so different to each other that what works for one is more than likely not going to work on another. Buy an new cooler.

    Crack in Mash tun

The cooler liner is most likely polypropylene. There are few adhesives that stick to it, and fewer still that are food grade and water and heat resistant. Do yourself a favor and buy a new cooler, and don't waste time and energy and money trying to make something stick to the cracked cooler.

    food-safe CO2 gun

I bought a new blow gun from Sears, and have used it for purging and starting siphons for years. I have never noticed any tastes or smells from it. The rubber parts may not be food safe, but I don't care since not much is going to be extracted by the stream of CO2 going through it. Don't...

    Corny Sanitation Question

To answer the first question: Iodophor contains iodine, which is light-reactive. It doesn't evaporate from the solution, it is destroyed by light. The sanitizing power is lost when the color is gone from the solution.

    Nor*Cal Brewing Solutions Hop stopper

This will be good for leaf hops and useless for pellet hops. The holes are just too big to stop the pellet powder. Also, looks like gravity keeps it on the bottom of the kettle. Ifyou stir and hit it you could displace it. If you have are brewing electrically, it may not fit below your...

Kettle size for both 5 and 10 gallon batches?

I do 5 and 10 gallon batches in a half barrel (15.5 gal) keggle. I usually start with 7 gallons for a 5 gallon all grain batch and 13 gallons for a 10 gallon batch. I end up with 5.5 gallons in my 6 gallon BB fermenters this way, due to evaporation, coefficient of thermal expansion and hop...

    Substitute for Oxyclean and PBW

Can you get automatic dishwasher detergent? Try to find an unscented one, usually the cheapest one on the shelf. It probably doesn't have any peroxide in it, but is pretty good stuff for cleaning.

How to lighten your sanke keggle

Raider11, Thanks from me too. I saw this and did it to my boil kettle, and love it. Easy to see into, less crevices for crud, and lighter to boot. It did take a while, and I was sweating about grinding too deeply, but it worked out well. Haven't shined it up and probably won't. I...

    Water or Star San change?

A quick question to those who are seeing differences in their StarSan mixtures - does the hardness of your tap water vary? For example, St Paul, MN, near me, gets some water from surface sources, and some from wells, and depending on where you live in the district and what the season is, the...

    Water or Star San change?

What happens is that the phosphoric acid in the Star San reacts with calcium, magnesium, iron or manganese ions in hard water and forms a precipitate of the metal ion and phosphate. Calcium phosphate, for example, which is highly insoluble in water. Too much hardness (metal ions) will...

    DIY Walnut Mash Paddle

I would suggest no finish as the best option. Many of the curing oils used for wood are not FDA compliant, and some contain heavy metal catalysts that could leach out. If you insist on a finish, find an FDA compliant one, but eventually the hot mash environment will break down any finish you...

Conical for Christmas... but which one?

Just my bias, but I would only buy one made in the USA. Tired of seeing our manufacturing base dry up as China's gets bigger.

Cleaning Plastic Fermenting Vessel with Hot Water Only

Water will not "wet" most plastic surfaces. Adding some Oxyclean or dishwasher detergent will reduce the surface tension of the water and allow it to wet the plastic surface, and the crud stuck on the walls of the fermenter. Use a non-scented, cheap generic or store brand of dishwasher...

    RubberMaid says "NO"!

Hex, I think you're over-worrying on the answer you got from Rubbermaid. First, they make coolers, and testing to 120 F is overkill for the intended purpose. FDA extraction testing is not cheap, so why test at temps the product isn't intended to see? Second, if the plastic passed extraction...

    Question regarding Cam-Locks

I put males on stationary equipment and females on hoses. I figure when I drop the hose the female will suffer external damage but will continue to seal properly. If the male fitting was dropped, onto my concrete floor, the I risk damage to the sealing surface.

    Star San "durability"

What can happen to it in a closed bucket? It's a mixture of water, phosphoric acid and sodium docecyl benzene sulfate. All are stable chemicals for long term storage. There are no chemical reactions that take place in the mixture. I keep mine for months at a time in a plastic pail with a...

    new mash tun copper manifold.

I dry assemble my manifold too. I gave each fitting a pinch with a pair of pliers so that the fit was tighter. Never had a problem with them coming apart at the wrong time, but if you over-pinch, they can get hard to pull apart for cleaning.

Electric Brewery - Supply Line Sanity Check

I would go with surface mounted EMT because it will be easier to modify next year when you have some great improvement to your garage/system that requires different wiring. Plus, I think EMT and boxes look way cooler than boring old outlets covers on sheetrock.
