    An air-tight airlock?

Yup, this community is fantastic. I agree.

    An air-tight airlock?

@KevinW No, I didn't put any liquid in there. I saw from a photo today that it seems like someone had just some water in there. So I take it I missed the trick of how to use it? :) That's the damn trouble of a beginners kit with all these things coming with it, without even an explanation of...

    An air-tight airlock?

Thanks all, I'll look into doing a blow off tube. What I did today was lift the plastic lid off the airlock, and leave it resting on the rest of the plastic mechanism. I presume this is not a great solution? BTW, this is my second brew. In my first brew I didn't even put the airlock on (as I...

    An air-tight airlock?

(Sorry for the silly question!) Is an airlock meant to be air-tight? I ask because my to-be beer is currently fermenting in the bucket. The bucket seems to be under pressure, as the plastic lid is being pushed upwards. There's some froth in the air lock, and a little liquid too. I'm...

    Carbonation drops needed for barrelling?

Hey, I'll be picking up a straight-forward ale for my second brew: http://www.homebrewwest.ie/coopers-original-real-ale-17-kg-10-p.asp The recommend: Brewing Sugar, Carbonation Drops. Since I'll be barrelling, and not bottling, do I even need carbonation drops on top of brewing sugar...

    Did I make beer?

Glad to report back that yes, this is beer. Thanks for all the comments above. Cap is now lubricated with plumber's grease, added about 80g more glucose, and even topped off with an 8g carbon dioxide capsule that over-pressured the keg (video of that in the post above). Pouring the beer is...

    Did I make beer?

I added the sugar and tightened the lubricated cap. An hour later, I topped up the pressure with an 8 gram CO2 capsule. About 30 seconds later, the cap starts whistling. This is it about a minute later. I put a little water on the cap to see the bubbling: http://youtu.be/_8I_EmB_cY0 Was there...

    Did I make beer?

Excellent, thanks for the detailed advice. I have the instructions, it says minimum 63F (converted from 17C). Are you saying that it's typically best to stay at the lower range of the given temperature range?

    Did I make beer?

Ok, so I won't mix it all up again. You're awesome, thanks for the advice. Should I keep it in a warm place, I guess? I'm just asking since I moved it down to a cool room before starting this thread a few days ago and it's been there since.

    Did I make beer?

Thanks, I found plumbers grease. When I add more sugar, should I give the beer a stir, and leave it in a warm place for another couple of weeks?

    Did I make beer?

I can't even find keg lube on the Irish or UK homebrew sites. Perhaps Vaseline is the answer for the cap....

    Did I make beer?

I hope this little leak wasn't partly to blame. It was a very small leak from this sealed area where the tap comes out of the plastic keg. During the whole three weeks in the keg only a very small bit leaked out, and a little more dripped when I poured this first glass I posted in the first...

    Did I make beer?

Ok, that's almost twice the amount of glucose I used, you're at about 140g.

    Did I make beer?

I'm thinking it will be hard to find food-safe lube in the local supermarket. I've never heard of such a thing until now.

    Did I make beer?

The extract said "no extra sugar required" but then in the instructions it said to add 80g boiled glucose. Maybe this time I'll add a further 80g. I'm worried that it might turn out too sweet if using more.

    Did I make beer?

I know one person who has done it. But speaking with others in Limerick there are always more stories of people who have done it. It seems like there's a dedicated shop in Galway. And there are Irish sites online, so you don't always have to order from the UK.

    Did I make beer?

That's interesting. I lubed it with water, but now I'm guessing that's the mistake. What's proper lube?

    Did I make beer?

Sorry, it's a keg I guess :) This is it: http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/balliihoo-5-gallon-pressure-barrel-beer-keg-with-lcd-temperature-indicator-p-8.html This is the cap that came with it: http://www.balliihoo.co.uk/standard-2-pressure-barrel-vent-cap-p-31.html But this is the valve cap I...

    Did I make beer?

Thanks for the suggestion! Does sealing it properly mean injecting with a canister after tightening the lid? Does it sound like i just failed to add extra pressure when barreling? I thought I had tightened the cap enough manually. FYI the barrel cap I had wasn't even one with a valve for...

No, I don't have other equipment.
