Pressure relef holes needed in brewstand?

I just fired up my burner for the first time mounted on the brew-stand, and noticed that as the stand heated up, steam started coming out o the open ends of the tube steel. This made me thing of the exploding keggle story because the ring on the bottom didn't have relief holes drilled. Should I...

Natural Gas Calculations with Banjo Burner?

I've been doing a lot of reading, learning quite a bit, and thought it was about time I ask for help to clarify and confirm. 1. The limiting factor of output of a Banjo burner on natural gas is the air Shutter, correct? We could in theory have a larger orifice for higher volume of Natural Gas...

    Low Pressure Propane Regulator?

Most people who use Low Pressure mention various regulators that can be bought online, and mention two stage. Will this one from Lowes / Home Depot work hooked up to a standard BBQ propane tank? Or is this meant to be hooked up to a source that is already lower-pressure than liquid propane...

    Quality Sanke Coupler?

It has been a long time since I've hooked up a sanke keg, and the coupler that came with my kegerator is a bit cheap and nasty now because i didn't take care of it properly. Any recommendations for a good quality stainless Sanke coupler? Ideally one that is easy to clean and replace seals as...

bduane's Welded Single-Tier Brew Stand Build Thread

Much credit to JonW as my plans are heavily based on his brew stand! I'll be posting pictures as I go along and try to describe any issues I run into and how I resolve them. Plans are below (designed in SketchUp Free) .I am using 14 guage 1 1/2" steel tube. I just started tacking the top...

Brew Stand - mitered joints or regular butt joints?

Woulds mitered joints for the top add to the strength of my brew stand (like in the first picture below)? I see a lot of people just use butt joints (either like in the 2nd or 3rd picture below), but it seems to me that would put all of the stress/weight of the kettles onto the weld... as a...

    2-row smells sour?

I built a recipe at adventures in homebrewing... And my crushed "2-row" smells sour... I've never noticed a sour smell before, and am worried my grain is actually sour malt not 2-row base malt.Does sour malt have a strong sour smell? If I taste the grain, would it be obvious if it was sour?malt?

    Shelving - 6' H, 4' W, 2' D - $49 at Lowes

Since the switch to All Grain, I have found my collection of brewing items have grown out of hand in my garage. I just found these shelves at Lowes for $49 each, and apparently they can be split into 2 "workbenches" as well. Seems like quite a deal, I just ordered 2 of them to pick up tomorrow...

    Finishing stir plate ideas

Right now my stir plate is a very minimal design. A piece of plexiglass connected to a 120mm computer fan, hooked up to a 25 ohm rheostat and an old 9v cell phone charger. My rheostat is hot glued to the plexiglass, it works but it isn't pretty! Any ideas to clean this up a bit at minimal cost...

Brand new stir bar lost it's magnetism?

Just bought it a few hours ago. I've been playing with my DIY stirplate trying to find the right balance/distance for the magnets on the fan. When I first started the stir bar would really stick right to where the magnet is and spin no problem at slow speed. But now, the stir bar barely wants...

    Flavor additions to Oatmeal Stout?

I just brewed an 8 gallon batch of oatmeal stout, split between a 6 gallon and 3 gallon carboys. I pitched S-04 in the 6 gallon and US-05 in the 3 gallon. Looking for ideas for the 3 gallon carboy to make it a little more interesting. I don't want to add anything too strong/harsh that will...

Any problem with using "Stale" flaked oats?

I need another half pound of flaked oats and I have some Quaker oats that have been opened that are just past their best by date... I'm sure these are stale as they've been opened, but will them being a little old/stale have any impact on my beer (FYI i will be toasting them if that makes a...

    Caramel Malt for Oatmeal Stout

I'm preparing to buy ingredients to brew the oatmeal stout recipe from Brewing Classic Styles. The recipe calls for 0.5lb of Crystal 80L, and I already have both Caramel 40L and Caramel 120L at home. If i mix these together, they average out to 80L. I'm sure there will be some different...

Will a wet wine thief or hydrometer impact reading?

I always sanitize my "wine thief" by dipping it in starsan before taking a sample, i always drain all of the liquid out and shake it dry a bit, but of course there are still a little bit of starsan foam clinging to the inside. Anybody have any idea if this is enough to impact a gravity reading?

    LD Carlson Yeast Energizer

I've read the FAQ's, and searched around, but they all seem to talk about other products and mention that it could vary greatly with different products. Does anybody have experience specifically with mead making and using LD Carlson Yeast Energizer? I'm interested in the staggered additions...

Just helped my GF make mead for the first time!

She made 2 1gal batches, recipes below. As I've never made mead before, we kind of just threw these together based on two of "Joe's" recipes. What do you think of these ingredient lists? My understanding is that they will ferment out very dry, so I'm thinking about back-sweetening these with...

    Fastest ingredients

Which ingredients have impact on how quickly the beer is ready? I hear many people say that wheat beers can go "from grain to glass" in as little as 10 days and still be tasty. What makes wheat beers not taste "green" when they are young? Is it the yeast strains typically used with wheat beers...

BKF - Will it damage silicone tubing?

I don't intend to use it for cleaning tubing, but after lathering up my keggle with it, i was wondering what the best way to rinse it out of there would be. The most convienient way that comes to mind is to siphon it off with my silicone tubing followed by flushing with water. Will diluted...

    Garden Hose Faucet safe?

Obviously most garden hoses are not safe, and thus I bought camper/RV ones that are safe for drinking water, but this made me think, is your typical garden hose faucet and plumbing safe? Considering these are designed for utility/gardening and not for drinking I am concerned they may use...
