Thanks for the great recipe! Although, I'm using Beer Alchemy and the 9# of extract is putting it at an OG of 1.080. I'm assuming I should pull it down to ~6lb 12 oz? That seems to put me in at around OG 1.064 and FG 1.019. Brewing it tonight!!!

Did you end up with more or less liquid out of primary? I could imagine that if you overshot the expected volume, the priming sugar wouldn't quite go as far...

Oh... and the biggest thing that made my 2nd run better than my firs was to always do a practice run w sanitized water before doing it with the real thing. It helped me find all the potential for leaks and spills before working with the beer/wort... Enjoy!!!

I'm relatively new too, but it's been awesome. I just bottled my first stout last night and it tastes incredible. The waits between brew and bottle day are interminable though so I've blogging about my brew experiences to pass the time...

Ah... I'm doing extract, so it will be pretty close to boiling by the time it's added... So I'm probably out of luck unless I get a refractometer right?

Hey ajf! So I shouldn't filter it out the pellets when I transfer to primary? Or should I leave them in there to kind of dry hop the beer?

Yeah... I'm new too, but everything I read says to be patient and keep it in primary for at least a week if not two. What sucks is most kit recipes try to rush you along (more for marketing reasons from what I've heard) instead of encouraging you to use gravity readings. Although I have to say...

So... stupid idea? I'm going to start a new batch, and want to be better about hitting my OG (last one was low). Would it make sense to take a hydro reading during the boil to so I can adjust by adding water or boiling off to hit the target? I have a floating hydrometer... would that jack it up...

Awesome... thanks guys. That definitely makes sense. It's going to take ~20 mins at least to chill the wort, so it will get all the goodness out then. I can't wait!

You can also use a mesh bag for pellet hops right? Any thoughts on the difference between pellets and whole hops on aroma?

my primary bucket has a spigot... sometimes i get antsy and check a little too often too. any big risk in this case since i'm not exposing it to air or dipping anything in it?
