    Summer Olympics 2012

Looks like the USA is off to a good start! Our volleyball squads are doing really well, got a few medals in swimming, and our lady gymnasts look strong. So far my favorite moment of the Olympics (or any television for a while) has been the following:

    Yew Crew Robust Porter

This is the first time I've felt compelled to submit one of my own recipes to the database, because it is FANTASTIC. It is an improvement on the first scratch porter I made with extract. I don't have the vocabulary to describe it to the T other than "HOLY S***!" Somewhat reminds me of Rasputin...

    Commercial SMaSH?

Does anyone know if there's a commercial SMaSH beer? There's plenty of single hop beers out there...

    FWH Marris Otter/Amarillo SMaSH

I've been doing lots of reading on first wort hopping and I'm still completely lost (and it seems everyone else is too). Some replace the 20 min with FWH, some replace bittering, some don't use FWH as a replacement of anything. My thought behind replacing the 60 min hop addition in this brew is...

    Las vegas

Are there any good places around the main casinos to get a good beer? All I can find is bmc and a tiny bit of sn and nb. Help!

    Mild Ale Malt Substitutions

Say hey! My next brown ale recipe calls for mild ale malt which my LHBS and many other vendors do not carry. I asked the LHBS to order some Maris Otter to use as a substitute, but somewhere along the line the order got lost and I'm now without MO for this grain bill found in Radical Brewing...

Partials - Reducing top off, or how I maintained hop utilization

I'm working on a recipe for an IIPA (Yooper's Ruination Clone modification) and I'd like to keep the hop utilization to a maximum. My last IPA is lacking in the bitter department. Here is Yoopers recipe with my modification to make it a partial mash: (originally started with 14# pale malt...

    Insulator for stovetop

I've only done one partial mash in my brewing career as of yesterday. In preparation, I constructed this little insulator out of that puffy aluminum insulation material, packing tape, and some velcro. It seems to have worked pretty well as the temperature dropped 1 degree over 60 minutes!

First partial mash - OG question

I did my first partial mash today and man was it a lot more fun! There was a bit of gravity magic happening, which I hope I can attribute to not mixing the top off water well enough. What do yall think? My 3 gallons of strike water was at 150, mashed for 75 min, then I sorta sparged at 170...

5 gallon kettle, 3 gal water, 8 lb grain?

This weekend I'm going to attempt my first partial mash but I may have set myself up for a disaster. I've done a half-a** search of the forums and haven't found anything on my dilemma. I have a 5+ gallon pot and 8 pounds of grain. Without actually putting everything together, I don't know if...

    Critique my Chamomile Rye

One of the best beers I've had was from Gilligan's Brewery (now on hiatus) in Seattle. They made some sort of chamomile beer that I still dream about to this day. Not sure if it was a pale (doubt it) or something lighter. I also have interest in using rye for my next batch, so I'm going to...

Hey, yeast from the brewery, sup?

I just got a couple mason jars of yeast donated to me from a local brewery; presumably the same yeast was in each jar. They looked and acted similarly, so I combined them into a growler with an airlock. I've been told by a few people that it isn't necessary to wash them and to just pitch a cup's...

    Reduce porter bitterness in secondary

Hey all, For my second 5 gal batch, I decided to get creative and wing it a bit and may have made a slight mistake. :drunk: Here's the recipe: 7.6 lbs pale LME (half added at 10 min to flameout) 0.5 lbs crystal 60L 0.5 lbs chocolate 0.5 lbs roasted 1 oz black patent 1 oz magnum (10%) (60...

    Increasing OG with diastatic malts

Noob here :ban: I'm working on my second extract recipe. I'd like to bump up the OG a bit in hopes of increasing the ABV without compromising flavor while incorporating partial mashing. My recipe so far is: 6.6 lbs pale LME (half at boil, half at 10 min till flameout) 0.5 lbs crystal...

    Added gypsum late

First post! Been lurking for a while now, and learning a lot. I brewed my first extract pale on saturday and everything went pretty smoothly. However, about 45 minutes into the boil I realized that I hadn't thrown in the gypsum that the hbs provided in the kit (apparently we have soft water)...
