My learning process thread - questions as I go

First of all, that mash tun works, but be careful of the brass. It can/will leech lead into your brew. Easy fix: Look in the metallurgy area of Palmer's book (yes!! Get it) and see how he says to soak the fixtures in peroxide and vinegar. Worth saying again: get the Palmer book and start...

    Cooling wort (extract brewing)

Well, I'll let others smarter than I answer any concerns, but as I said, this is working well for me. I use liquid yeast with a starter, so I put the starter in the same cooler as the wort. They are then the exact same temp. I aim for 65f.

Best cheap commercial beer you've ever had?

I refuse to drink beer from the big breweries. And price is relevant. But my "go to" beer is definitely Torpedo by Sierra Nevada. I absolutely love it. Yes it is a big(ger) brewery, but they are sparing no expense on the ingredients and the price stays (here) at just over $7 a 6pack.

    Cooling wort (extract brewing)

Well, let me offer something kind of different. I'm not an expert at all, but have been brewing a few years and I usually "get it right". I'm an AG brewer. My main point here is that I am much more worried about contamination than I am about the old adage "cool it as fast as possible". I...

    Quick Question

Rocket, just a suggestion. Papazian's book is good, but is getting a bit out of date. Palmer is the way to go - but his on-line version, as indicated above, is abbreviated. It is also an older edition with some holes. If you are serious about sticking with brewing, I'd really suggest biting...

    This sucks 1st time bottling

As you've seen, there are a million methods to label removal. I personally don't like labels on my brew. Also, it REALLY depends on the glue used by the bottler. One thing not mentioned above that I saw is that if you opt for 22 oz bottles, you need to know that they are often/generally of...

    Secondary fermentation

Having had cases of bad stuff, I'm loath to bottle too early. You really can wait for up to about 4 weeks in the primary until you HAVE to bottle. Be sure. Also, I would heartily recommend getting something like Beersmith to find out what your OG and FG should be, given your...

I think my yeast died in transit

I've heard it is very hard to overpitch. I ALWAYS use a starter. Given that, I ordered from Northern Brewer a few weeks ago a smackpak. I thought too late about the heat wave throughout the entire country at that time. I figure it was is 100+ heat for 8 days. Even more depending on how long...

carboy vs. bucket... blow off tube... oh look all my yeast is in a bucket.

I've found a number of good ways to go with this. One is to buy a 6.5 gallon carboy - but, for me, they are a bit expensive ($45) when I have 3 already. Another is to do a good job at backing into the amount of sparge water to use (I AG brew, btw). I know absorption of grain, and I know how...

    Quick Question

Yup. as emjay said, use a thief/sampler (aka turkey baster - lol) to grab a bit, put in the tube your hydrometer came from, take a reading, drink the sample (I've never been inclined to throw it out). You should put a mark on the tube as to how far to fill it each time. Buy/dedicate a turkey...

    Hello from MiddleofNowhere, Florida

I am new to the Board, from Minnesota, then Georgia, now Florida panhandle in such a wasteland that they call themselves The Forgotten Coast. haha I have to drive about 3 hours (r/t) for a decent beer. I have to drive 11 hours (r/t) to find a brewpub - which I lived at in Atlanta. Some of...
