New Jersey FREE! mini fridge and swamp cooler ice chests - Camden County

Audubon NJ. I have a mini fridge that I was going to turn into a kegerator. I cut the shelves off the door and took the thermostat off. I did not bend the freezer compartment down yet. I have all parts. I don't have the model number but it will fit 2 ball locks after the freezer is bent down...

New Jersey South NJ: Igloo Cube swamp coolers (2 for sale)

I have two Igloo Cube coolers for sale. They have been modified so that a 6.5 gallon carboy fits in them. The neck sticks out the top but the wort is safely enclosed in darkness and cool water. This cooler helps me keep my ferm temps in a decent range. They have a suitcase like handle and...

Can it even be done? Measuring Specific Gravity using Arduino or Raspberry Pi

So. I want to track my fermentations a little better. I have brewpi installed on one of my raspberry pis. I know that this can track my temps just fine and it can integrate with arduino boards. The holy grail for me would be the ability to see my specific gravity as it drops to get a ROUGH...

    Is Hop union's scale broken?

I just brewed a rye ipa that called for two additions of warrior hops and two additions of magnum hops. All additions were 0.5 oz so I had to open the 1oz packs and weigh them in order to split them. My pack if warrior was 0.45oz total and my pack iof magnum hops weighed 1.20 oz. What the heck?

    Wintering Hops

I was cleaning up the hop yard this weekend and I noticed some things that look off with my hops. The top of the crown on some of my plants are partially exposed. I'm guessing that all the rain here in the northeast washed some dirt away. How much cover should I give these crowns? Follow...

How long did it take to sail from England to India in the 18th century

This is beer related I swear. So historically an IPA sat on hops in a cask as it made the trip from England to India. For fun, I got a pin sized cask from northern brewer and I wanted to recreate that length of time. My Google powers have failed me. Does anyone know how long an 18th...

Help me win a couple of arguments against my father in law

Background: So my father in law has jumped head first into wine making. We currently have 35 gallons of Pinot Noir fermenting in my basement. He bought fresh grapes and the crusher/destemmer along with huge fermenters. He has got a nice setup going. Argument #1: He has a stainless...

Hop spider/bagged hops - when do you pull it?

I just realized a part of my process might be negatively impacting my final product. So here is the question: If you use a hop spider or hops in a bag, when do you pull the bag? My last session I brewed a Kolsch. Reviewing my notes from the weekend, I realized that I did not leave the hop...

Last year's dud, this year's stud?

I have 4 2nd year plants. Two cascades and two fuggles. After planting the fuggles last year, I realized that they were not getting nearly as much sun as the cascades. Oh well no biggie. This was proven true when my 2011 harvest yielded 5.5 oz of cascades and 0.5 oz of fuggles. But guess...

    Munich Light vs Munich 10L

I see some recipes that refer to "Munich Light" malt and others that refer to "Munich 10L". I just want to make sure that these are two names for the same thing. I'm fairly certain that they are since Munich Light has a Lovibond rating of 10 which is what the 10L refers to in the name Munich...

Questions about buying grains in bulk

I'm slowly making moves that will allow me to brew all grain batches by the spring. My Christmas present from my family was a penrose kettle from the brewhemouth guys. I'm super excited about it! At some point I'm going to get involved in my local group grain buy for a 50lb sack of 2 row or...
