    Digging up a plant

I know this may be a strange question, but I have only enough room for 8 plants. Great Lake Hops were generous enough to give me one free Fuggle plant last winter. I planted it and it's been less than spectacular this year. I saw today that they had Cascade on their site and ordered one. I want...

    Japanese Beetles

I've apparently been invaded. I noticed some holes in my healthy leaves but didn't see what was causing it. My neighbor, an avid gardener with a huge plot, casually told me the other day the Japanese Beetles are back. Today I noticed 4 or 5 of them on my Zeus plant. I knocked them off and...

Help in identifying what this is?

First year hop crowns, I have 8 different plants. Planted all in the ground with bagged garden soil. All plants have been in the ground for a little over a month and are growing like crazy. A couple days ago I noticed the ends of the leaves on my Magnum plant were drying and turning brown. We've...

    Please clarify

First year hop grower here with a question. I've been reading conflicting info and just need to be clarified. I have planted 8 hop crowns, all are producing 4-6 bines each, tallest being around 8 inches so far. I've read to choose the strongest bine from each plant and train to the wire. I've...

    My yard build

Over the last couple days I transformed my south yard into this monstrosity. This will be my first year attempting hop growing, so I'm planning on periodically updating this thread with pictures as the process goes along.

    Sour

I recently kegged a Raspberry lambic I brewed 14 months ago. It's very good and everyone who tries it seems to like it. It has the defining Brett taste to it but isn't the least bit sour. How does one get the puckering sour taste I spend so much money on in commercial versions? Sorry if it's a...

    Crowns

I ordered 4 crowns this week, one of each noble hop. I should have read better as I assumed they'd be shipped in the spring, but it looks like I'm getting them by the end of the week. My question is how should I store these crowns until the warmer spring temps? Should I put each in a planter...

    Sorachi

Anyone know of a place that has some in stock? I don't need much, but may buy a few more seeing how difficult it is to find any.

    First Mead

So, bought 12 lbs of local honey the other day to try my hand at a simple mead. Mixed it in with 5 gals of water, and a pack of wyeast sweet mead. Admittingly I didn't do much research before hand, just enough to understand the process. Couple questions, I had the honey mixed with the water...

I made a new brewer today

My daughter and son-in-law gave me a seasonal recipe book for Christmas today, they got it from an lbs in upstate NY where they live. He was saying how he was looking at the starter kits in there but didn't really want to spend the money on one. Then it dawned on me! My old Coopers micro-brew...

    Faucet Locks or in-line valves?

So I come home from work today and notice some droplets and a small spill from my tap, housing my imperial bourbon stout. My underage son is home from college for Thanksgiving, and although I applaud his taste in quality beer, I don't want him indulging when I'm at work. I've installed a hasp...

    Tapping my beer fridge

I've decided that I'm going to install four taps on my beer fridge. After looking at all the hardware needed I'm not sure if I know what the hell I'm doing :) and am looking for a little advice. Currently I have four pin lock kegs. I use two at a time now with a duel regulator system and...

    Berliner Weisse

Brewed one a couple weeks ago, took a gravity and sampled a bit tonight, and wow was I impressed. Already very sour after just a couple weeks, light, and quite tasty. My only question, wonder why there aren't more commercial versions of this style? It's cheap and easy to make, and in my opinion...

    Persimmon Lambic

I have about 30 ripe persimmons my swmbo collected today. I'm considering a persimmon lambic to enjoy perhaps next year at this time. Anyone have experience preparing persimmons for this use? I'm assuming you make pulp out of them first? Anyone have a good recipe as well? Thanks!

    Scottish ale oaked with Scotch

I'm considering experimenting with making a traditional scottish ale, then secondary with some oak chips, then kegging with 675 ml of Scotch...nothing too expensive however. Was curious if anyone has attempted this? If it was a huge disasters I might just save my money.

    Pressure in keg keeps rising

Ok, so I kegged two beers this last weekend (an IPA and a Kolsch). I initially set both kegs at 30 psi for about 24 hrs, then dropped the IPA to 8 psi, and the Kolsch to 12 psi. The Kolsch is holding steady at 12 psi for the last 48 hrs, however the IPA keeps gradually rising back up to 30psi. I...

    Saison Du Buff 2012

Watched this live tonight...there is a reference to HBT by Wil Wheaton at the end to anyone interested! http://youtu.be/AjObDDenXbY

    Cold Crashing an IPA

I've never cold crashed before but want to experiment with making clearer beers. I've searched and read differing opinions on the duration of cold crashing. So how long should I do it, 24 hrs, 48, a week? Also, I read where someone said the cold crashing will take some hop bitterness from...

    Pipe smoking

Anyone here smoke a pipe? I've recently taken it up. My grandfather left me a Dr Grabow Starfire quarter bent squat bulldog pipe after his death 35 years ago. I'm still trying to get the pack down to where it burns nice, it seems to go out on me a lot with how I'm currently doing it. I still...

    Killed the Keg

it was the first time I had kegged....and what a disappointing sound when the beer stopped and all I got was CO2 :( Looks like I get to fill it with something new now :D
