SG frequency - my simplistic approach

After pitching, I take a sample and leave it in the hydrometer beaker with the hydrometer still in. Granted it is warmer by my kitchen sink than in the ferment chamber, I still get an idea of what the FG will be, and how long it'll take.

How long do you take to reach boil?

Tonyolympia, what temp are you starting at? With a 3200 watt glasstop stove I am bringing about 6.5 gallons from 60 to 160 in about 45 minutes or so. I do my mash biab style and then it takes about another 20 min or so to bring it to a boil.

    Basic Stout

Here's a basic stout recipe that my wife and I came up with. 9lbs Pale Malt 1lb Roasted Barley Mash BIAB style for about 60 minutes ~152-154 in a full pot (34 quarts). Raise temp to 170 for about 10 min. Thanks to Hops Direct, I have waay too much Hershbrucker, Hallertau, Perle, and...

    First All Grain Batch

Just bottled off this batch. 21 bottles in total (16 oz). The brew looks very cloudy, though this may be because I didn't use any whirlfloc. The FG was quite high at 1021 or so. This was after about 2.5 weeks in the primary so it had plenty of time to completely ferment. I think the reason...

    wild strain

I just figured I'd throw the whole sample into some sugar water just for fun and see how far down it'll ferment. If it does ferment strongly, I might try crushing some 2row and making a small wort starter to build up these yeasties. After that, if I'm successful I might just try a small 2...

    wild strain

I think I just caught a wild strain completely by accident. A couple of days after taking a sample of my wort for an OG reading and forgetting it on the counter, I had a vigorous fermentation. Sample was originally taken before I pitched the yeast. The fermentation has since subsided so I...

    First All Grain Batch

Oops, Final volume of just less than 3 gallons I should have said.

    First All Grain Batch

I figured I'd skip steeping specialty grains and partial mash altogether and just make the jump from being an extract brewer to all grain. The size of my brew pot limited me to a <3gallon volume which is fine with me for now, though I have a feeling a 10 gallon kettle is in my near future. So...
