    Lilac Wine Question

Wow!! What a difference a little time makes. We tasted the Lilac back in August and my wife suggested we throw it out, it was just awful. I decided to put it back and forget about it. I tasted it this morning and it's great!! I just finished bottling it. Like usual, I wish I had made...

Thanks Yooper, I think I have a new technique to try out.

    Good Hard lemonade

I'm not a pro, but I've only used regular bread yeast and have made gallons & gallons of hard lemonade, it turns out fine. In fact, if you Google yeast nutrient substitute, it'll say to use bread yeast because it's loaded with nutrient. It's not like Lemonade is gonna be mistaken for fine...

I think you need to add some bacon for that.......

    Wine fermenting smell

Are you using a new(er) airlock?? I get that new rubber smell for quite a while but I can distinguish it from the others. It shouldn't affect your wine as long as the liquid isn't touching the rubber stopper.

    Another Honey Suckle Question

I started my first batch of Lilac a couple weeks ago. I poured boiling water over the flowers and let them sit, loose, in the primary for 48 hrs. I strained them through cheese cloth and just gave it a light sqeeze to get the water out. I added the rest of the ingredients and put it under...

Just moved and have a grape vine, now what?

I've never seen "fence row" grapes produce as well as a maintained arbor. I doubt if you'll get much this year. Without seeing them, I'm going to say you'll want to thin them out a little this summer, then trim them up in the spring before they bud. You should start getting better grapes...

Skeeter Pee instructions using dry yeast?

Yeah, clearing was going to be a non issue. I figured we were going to have to strain it through our teeth... LOL There are going to be over 20 people and I only have a gallon so it's pretty much just going to be a taste test for them. I think I'm going to leave it behind though. I have...

What can I make in two months?

I'm a little late to answer, but 2 months is more than enough time to make a batch of hard lemonade. Cheap frozen concentrate, sugar and regular old yeast is all I use. If you let it ferment in a warm spot, I've had it ready as quick as 3 weeks. If you want the recipe, I can give you specifics.

Skeeter Pee instructions using dry yeast?

I whipped up a batch of hard lemonade 12 days ago hoping it would be ready for a family gathering this coming weekend. Last Saturday, I combined 2 half gallon carboys into a newly emptied 1 gallon jug (I love racking and taste testing!!). The little bubbles started up the side right away...

    dandelion wine

Those green streaks are ok to leave in, that crown shaped thing on the outside is what has to go. If you use a knife, sometimes the cut end has a green tint to it too, we don't worry about that either. We used to pick them out like you are doing, my wife decided that was a waste of time and...

    Lilac Wine Question

My first thought was Pepto Bismal everytime I looked at it. It has paled some in the last week. Still the brightest stuff I ever made.

    dandelion wine

I use everything above the stem that isn't green. Here's what we do, I'll try to explain this but I wish I had pictures. Hold the flower in your left hand, kind if squeeze it shut with your finger tips and lay it down sideways on a cutting board. If you look close at the flower/head/stem...

    dandelion wine

If you find the nice big blossoms that have never been mowed, you can pick them pretty fast. I like the ones on the edge of farm fields that haven't been sprayed yet. I'm not sure of weight, my recipe uses 6 cups of petals. This amount is about 1/3 of a paper grocery sack of flowers. I...

    dandelion wine

It's kind of tedious to make, but well worth it. I figure if I'm working by myself, I can get a gallons worth going in the primary, start to finish, in about 3 hours. It's a lot nicer when my wife helps though, at least there is somebody to talk to. Are you using a knife to "clean" the...

    Multi Taskers

I'm finishing cleaning the kitchen from my last wine making and I'm curious. How many of you have special stuff you only use for wine making?? Other than my air locks, vintage glass vinigar jugs and my hand corker, all my supplies pull double duty. My favorite primary is a 3 gallon enamel...

    Lilac Wine Question

I was thinking the same thing, I've never had bad juice turn into good wine. I can usually smell the wine from the venting airlock, but I used a new one on this jug and all I can smell is fresh rubber. I broke down when the wife got home from work and did what I never do..... I took the...
