Recipe Review - Oktoberfest with Koelsch Yale yeast

G.D. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out soon. Makomachine & BigEd I have used Vienna in the past and liked it blended with German pils. I suppose I could use it here as well. I am looking for something with a little richer flavor and deeper color than I envision those three grains...

Recipe Review - Oktoberfest with Koelsch Yale yeast

Greetings - I am planning on brewing an Oktoberfest ALE using Kolsch yeast since I can't ferment at lager temps in the summer. My thinking is that the Kolsch gives a good clean crisp result, so it should work okay for the purpose. My planned recipe is below, any thoughts on the concept or...

A bit sweeter ... higher temp?

Greetings! I made a Hefeweizen this spring that I just tapped. Although I like it, I don't like it as much as last spring's batch, which had just a hint of sweetness to it. My recipe was the same for each. 5 lbs German Pils and German Wheat, .8 oz Hallertau for 60 min, and White Labs...

    Hopslam

Had a glass at a local bar on Sunday and thought it was excellent. I noticed a fruity / watermelon aroma at first, then a bit of an alcohol kick when I took a drink. This is not something I would drink several pints of all at once, but it was great in between a few Founder's IPA's. Never had...

    Noob question for concentrate wine

If you are using the standard triple scale hydrometer, I would bet that you read the wrong scale on one of your readings. Or you had too big a "sample" and weren't seeing straight. :drunk: Take another measurement to confirm which is correct.

    A couple of Beersmith questions

I found that when I went with the default numbers for the 10 gallon cooler, my mash temps would be a few degrees too cold. I now preheat with hot water from the tap for about 20 minutes while my mash water is on the burner, dump the pre-heat water, add the grain and mash water and my numbers...

    Wood-Aged Beer Oaked Arrogant Bastard

I have never used Special B, is that where your dark black color comes from? I absolutely love Stone's AB, so I may try something like this in the future.

    mash profile on beersmith

Go to mash profiles on the left side of the main screen. Then select single infusion (light/medium/full) body, batch sparge. From there, if you want to empty your tun before adding the batch sparge, select that check box and you are good to go. The program will give you the correct amounts of...

Screw the numbers, it's time to brew!

Okay, I went and did it. I hit the numbers on this brew closer than any previous attempt, I think I might finally have beersmith dialed in. So, the brew went according to plan, now I have to wait a couple of weeks to see if the plan is any good. I hate waiting! Anyhow, when I moved my ESB...

Screw the numbers, it's time to brew!

Paralysis by analysis . . . I have spent too much time second guessing my recipe and process, it is time to go forth and brew, numbers be damned! Seriously, beer styles (German Pills or Bohemian?) Water (Pilsen is way different from anything in Germany according to the numbers), Hops, not...

Keep Me On The Right Track - German Pils

Okay, a quick hop inventory shows I have 2 ounces of Tettnang in addition to the Saaz. Unless I wan't to get totally stupid and use EK Goldings. :p So, what should I expect if I use the Tettnang instead of the Saaz, or should I use one for bittering and one for flavor/aroma? Also...

Keep Me On The Right Track - German Pils

Thanks for the help guys. I was planning on using the Saaz because I like the flavor and aroma and I have some on hand. I will check my fridge and see if I have some German noble hops instead. As for the water, I was planning on going with distilled as I do not have an RO filter, and my...

Keep Me On The Right Track - German Pils

Hi all - It is cold here in Michigan right now, and my basement will be at the perfect temp for a lager for about the next 2 months, time to try something new. Please take a look at my German Pils and let me know what you think. I plan to brew this tomorrow night if all goes according to...

Glock & gun guys: Need some help

Do NOT remove the sight if you do not have the tool to push it back on. And do NOT listen to anyone who tells you that you can put it back on with a punch, you will screw the heck out of the dovetail. If you just want to clean it up a bit, use some Hoppes solvent and scrub the heck out of it...
