    West Coast Radical Red Ale?

It's definitely more on the malty side, but I like it. It's interesting and delicious. I'll have to look up my actual OG and such, but I think I might have been a tad bit under. And yeah... it's really red.

Ordered Oud Bruin Ingredients from NB, Changed my mind

Was leaning towards the BPA route. Only thing is the Carafa will probably mess with the coloring. But heck, if it tastes good, I don't really care.

Ordered Oud Bruin Ingredients from NB, Changed my mind

I decided that after I had already ordered this ingredient kit (with the Roeselare yeast blend) from Northern Brewer that I don't feel like waiting for a sour beer and I'd rather use the existing ingredients, swap the yeast blend at my LHBS for another strain (probably Wyeast 3522 Ardennes), and...

Anyone else have really thirsty friends?

I think I'll end up doing a simple donation jar first... that will help. Expanding on my idea earlier, I had an idea that might be a little more fun. Develop an app that will run on a tablet next to my taps, and have it display a fundraiser thermometer with $30 being the goal. When they hit...

Anyone else have really thirsty friends?

This is just the nerd in me thinking out loud... but it would be really cool to have a QR code with a link to donate, and somehow hack a digital photo frame or something to display one of those donation goal thermometers that would poll my paypal account for the balance.

Anyone else have really thirsty friends?

I do 5 gal batches, so we burned through 2 already. One of my roommates always helps me on brew day, whether that be helping me do stuff that's easier with multiple sets of hands or just cleaning stuff. The other one works a lot so doesn't drink much as a result. I think I'll try the donation...

Anyone else have really thirsty friends?

That's the idea, just wanting to know how was a good way to approach that. Donation box? Take them to the LHBS with you?

Anyone else have really thirsty friends?

So I'm 26 and live with two roommates. We have friends over regularly and still consume quite a lot of beer. Since I started brewing again, it's started to hit my wallet. 10 gallons was done in about 2 weeks. I'm glad to have a little help drinking some of the beer so I can continue to brew new...

Saw on NOLA Brewing's website that they cancelled their brewery tours until further notice.

Beer and non tourist destinations in New Orleans

Hey guys, You provided some good feedback for my Portland trip so I'm gonna go back to the well again! I'm going to be in NOLA this weekend Friday morning through Sunday evening for a buddy's bachelor party and we're looking for some cool guy stuff to do. Already have the titty bars planned...

    5 Gallon Home depot cooler

It will work, but it depends on if you want to ever do big beers. I use a 5 Gallon Coleman MAXCold water cooler and it works great for me, but I never really do beers bigger than 1.06. Hardly loses any temp since there is little headspace.

Fell asleep on couch, boil went 6 hours

On a scale from 1 to full-on idiot, I would say this one scored pretty high. I fell asleep yesterday on the couch, and my 6.5 gallon boil reduced down to 1-2 gallons before I woke up. Since it was 1:30 AM, I turned off the burner, put the lid on the pot, and went to bed. Its still sitting...

    Amber/Copper Color from Vienna SMaSH

Found this article online. The "gold malt" seems to be what im looking for. Does it seem accurate? http://barleypopmaker.info/2009/12/08/home-roasting-your-malts/ For Pale Gold Malt (est. 10 L), which has a nutty but not toasty flavor, roast your base malt for 20 minutes at 250 Degrees F...

    Amber/Copper Color from Vienna SMaSH

Toasty/bready is ok for me. Thanks for the advice on toasting. As I've never done it before, it's good to know what I might expect.

    Amber/Copper Color from Vienna SMaSH

Hey guys, Was trying to think through making an ordinary bitter with just Vienna malt, and wanted to get some ideas on how to get a copper color from it as well as some caramel notes. Here's my two ideas so far: 1. Toast 2 of the 8 lbs of Vienna in the oven at 350 for 10-20 minutes 2...

Wanting to travel to Oregon brewers festival

Thanks for all the replies, guys. The festival wasn't really the only reason for my trip, I wanted to visit the city anyway, it's just the festival helped me pick the date. Any other sites/restaurants/tap rooms that area must visit?

Wanting to travel to Oregon brewers festival

Good point about avoiding the busy day. I don't necessarily have to go on a brewery tour, but I'd like to know the cool beer relates places to go. I think I might stay at the paramount hotel since it looks to be within walking/stumbling distance of the festival.

Wanting to travel to Oregon brewers festival

Wanted to take at least one day to visit a brewery. Which day during the festival is the slowest and what would be the best brewery tour around downtown?
