    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Agreed, and for anyone looking to get into BIAB, I use this: http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?cPath=178_59_85&products_id=12003 Works PERFECT for my 10 gallon pot - I can just rest it on the top of the pot and let it drip. It holds about 13lbs of wet grain well (possibly...

    Equipment upgrade question

You should definitely look into BIAB before you buy all that equipment: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/biab-brewing-pics-233289/ I'm planning on doing my first BIAB batch soon and the only equipment I purchased was a propane burner, a 10gal BK, and an immersion chiller.

    Input on Porter Recipe

I'm pretty new to brewing too, but it looks like a pretty solid grain bill. My only question is why use crystal 60 and 80 instead of just one or the other? Also, I'd probably just mash for 60 minutes like you usually do. Can't hurt anything.

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

There is a little over 3/4 cubic feet available in that basket. Not sure how much space wet grain takes up in BIAB, but that gives you an idea if you can get an estimate of how much the grain will expand.

First Recipe (BIAB) - How's it look?

Seems that most people that use the BIAB method have pretty good efficiencies. Anyone want to comment on the grainbill/hop schedule?

First Recipe (BIAB) - How's it look?

So I have two extract/special grain batches under my belt now and I want to take the next step without upgrading to an AG system. I read through Seven's no sparge BIAB tutorial and I think I can do it. I used ProMash (evaluation - I'll probably be buying it). Here's the recipe I came up...

    Noob question about OG

I'm formulating my first extract recipe, and I have a quick question about calculating the OG. I'm doing a 5 gallon full boil with an initial boil volume of 6 gallons. When I'm calculating the OG by multiplying (.035) x (pound LME per gallon of boil water), do I use 5 gallons or 6 gallons as...

Noob here - what does "high attenuating yeast" mean? Same thing as making a big starter?

    First extract recipe

smagee, thanks for the input. I got all the info from the beer recipator (http://hbd.org/recipator/). I wonder why there's such a big difference...any idea?

    Curse you displacement!!

I'm no expert by any means, but I believe it would lower your conversion percentage because the wort would be more concentrated, therefore less sugars would be extracted (osmosis-related).

    First extract recipe

Nice thread manortc. Sorry I didn't specify the batch size - 5 gallon full boil (6 gallons starting liquid)

    First extract recipe

Yep, smagee got it right with the light extract. It just seems easier to me to get the color from specialty grains and stick with a light extract. In fact, morebeer doesn't even sell dark extracts - just light and pilsner. Any input on the sugar usage?

    First extract recipe

Hey guys, I'm putting together my first recipe and I need some help. I love stouts and porters, so here's what I got so far: Dry Imperial Stout (I think, right?) 7# Briess Light LME .5# Chocolate Malt .5# Black Patent Malt 1# Brown Sugar 1# Cane Sugar Hop schedule: 1oz Magnum @ 60min 1oz...

    Just brewed 1st full-boil batch

Lostman, how fast do you get 6-7 gallons (I'm assuming you're doing 5gal batches) to a boil with 38,000 BTUs?

    Just brewed 1st full-boil batch

Hey guys. Just brewed my first full boil batch with my new 10gal pot. Lets just say my electric range took foorrever...I think I want to upgrade to propane. Couple of questions, though: I know the "banjo" is the most popular burner, but is it really worth $80 plus the cost of a propane...
