    Grain bill/efficiency

Thanks for the input. When I brew 5gal batches I use a 10gal cooler; when I brew 2.5gal batches I mash in a 5gal cooler, and batch sparge with one step. I usually just halve my recipes using brewpal or beersmith. Measured temps are are usually within a degree or two. Volumes are measured pretty...

    Grain bill/efficiency

So I asked this in the all grain forum but got no answer, so I'll try here. Does the size of your grain bill have any effect on conversion efficiency? Will fifteen lbs of grain convert more completely than seven lbs? I ask because I've been brewing 2.5 gal batches which are consistently coming...

    2.5g batch/lowOG

I've been attempting to brew 2.5g batches, but my OG's are consistently coming up low. I use a 5 gal. cooler for mashing, and am pretty anal about temps and volumes. My grain is milled at the store, and I've considered that as the culprit, but I brew10g batches with friends and we get our grain...

    Immersion or Counterflow?

I whirlpool prior to CFC, and the vast majority of trub stays in the kettle.

    Immersion or Counterflow?

I use a CFC without a pump and it works fine. I elevate my kettle no more than the height of a 5 gallon bucket above the chiller, and it flows fine. Go from kettle temps to 58F in the amount of time it takes to drain the kettle. Would never go back to a IC. Only possible draw back is that your...

    Brew software beat to death

Before I started using Beersmith, I used Brewpal on my Ipod. I found it intuitive and easy to use.

    Speidel Plastic Tanks

    That's great info., thanks.

    Speidel Plastic Tanks

    Duh...of course. Thanks

    Speidel Plastic Tanks

Please bear with me if this is a stupid question; but when bottling directly from these, how do you add the priming sugar without stirring up the trub? I would like to skip transferring to a bottling bucket if possible.

    Cool yeast before pitching?

Hey thanks. Yeah, I've had good frementations with S05 dry; thought I'd give it a try though. Thanks again.

    Cool yeast before pitching?

I've been working on an IPA recipe for a few brews now, using S05. I heard Jamil on Brewstrong say that you should hydrate dry yeast before pitching for best results. I thought I'd give this a try, but I have a question. My wort comes out of my CFC in the low 50's this time of year, so I'm...

    A couple of Beersmith questions

Patrick Thanks. I went ahead and didn't pre-heat and hit my temps OK. I would agree with everyone that cooling a too high mash is easier than the opposite.

    A couple of Beersmith questions

    OK, thanks.

    A couple of Beersmith questions

I'm using Beersmith for the first time to brew a small (2.5 gal) batch tomorrow. I've set up my mash equipment and entered 66F as my grain and tun temps. I'm assuming Beersmith accounts for these temps when it calculates my strike and sparge temps, so there is no need to pre-heat my tun...

    Coil Wort Chiller question.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you'll get your wort to lower temps if the water runs from bottom to top. That way as the wort travels through the coil it is always exposed to the coldest water. I'm assuming you're talking about a counterflow chiller.

    Too much?

I bottled a pale ale today using 2.2oz of corn sugar for 1.88 gal. of beer, ( I totally over-estimated how much wort was in the carboy ). By my figurings, that should yield about 3.00 - 3.25 vol. of CO2. Do i need to worry about beer-splosions in my 12oz bottles?

    MLT for 2.5 gal experiments

I just brewed a 2.5 gal batch using a 10 gal rubbermaid MLT. Didn't use anything to reduce headspace, and it held my mash temp. just fine. Didn't seem to have more husk than a normal 5 gal batch during vorlauf.

How much light is too much?

Hmmmmmm, I guess I'll just cover up. Thanks for the quick replies.

How much light is too much?

I'm fermenting an APA in the semi - controlled conditions of my crawlspace(60f-64f) with S-04. It is not completely dark because of the foundation vents, but is still reasonably dark. I haven't wrapped the carboy with a towel because I like to be able to just open the crawlspace cover and check...
