have you ever intentionally made a "bad" beer?

with the popularity of SMASH beers and people splitting batches to try different yeasts etc., I am wondering if anybody has intentionally made a batch to see what something tastes like. Ever made a beer with a mash 170F+ to test for astringency or fermented in the upper 70s so you know what...

    cuts in cooler mash tun

i just got an old cooler from my mom to use as a mash tun (planning on just using a bag and not converting it). the inside of the cooler has cuts through the insulation, so i assume wort would get trapped behind there. anybody have experience patching cuts in coolers? i figured epoxy would work...

poking a hole in a bucket lid

i bought a primary without a hole in the lid off amazon. i don't have a drill, but i'm wondering if anbody has had any luck just cutting a hole with a razor or something? I can borrow a drill at some point, but i'm thinking i'll just try cutting a whole and putting a grommet in it any ideas?

EdWort's Haus PA into an IPA

I've got the ingredients for EdWorts PA, but i want to brew an ipa. i have a pound of cascade, willamette and hallatauer, and about a .5oz or so of centennial. i ordered the grain bill from BMW, and can't really swap anything, but I was planning on just lowering the overall volume to...

    High fermentation with notty

I brewed up Edwort's Haus Pale Ale yesterday, and pitched a pack of notty into it at about 75 degrees. It was only a 3 or so gallon batch, and i put it into my swamp cooler with the water up to the point where it nearly was floating. I have been changing out ice bottles all day, but the...

    Infection Check Recipe

I have been having a problem with infections recently, so I brewed this small batch to see if my top off water was responsible. Basically just used what I had lying around. ~2 gallon batch 2lbs Extra Light DME .3oz each of Willamette and Hallertau @60 .3oz each of Willamette and...

    How to fix infection problems

so I have been having some issues with minor infections. Nothing like the pictures I have seen, but my last 3 batches have tasted very sour after 2-5 weeks in the primary fermenters. As of now I am thinking it is my tap water that I have been using to top off. The water worked fine during the...

Sour smell/taste on past 3 batches??

My last 3 batches have all had the same sour smell and taste to them. I have been brewing for about 6 months, and I have had some great successes doing extract and partial mashes. Things that were different about these brews: 2 of them were AG recipes (1st tries at AG) that I got from...

    Gravity Fed Immersion Chiller

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I have seen some people tossing around the idea, but nobody with experience doing it. Could I build an immersion chiller, but instead of having water coming from a faucet or hose, have it coming from my bottling bucket? Would it have enough pressure to...

How much creative liberty do you take on other recipes?

When you guys brew up a recipe that you find on here or in a book or whatever, how much of it do you claim as your own? Do you rename it? Enter it into competitions? I have been brewing recipes from online here, with minor substitutions, mostly hops just because I have 3 varieties in lb...

    Removing hops during boil

Anybody ever tried it? Theories on what it would do? I imagine it would drive off the aroma, but what about the flavor? Basically saying add hops to a hop bag at say 60 minutes, then remove them at 45, or any other combination. Just an idea, not planning on trying it anytime soon because...

The reason its hard to save money homebrewing

There are always threads on here about whether or not you can save money homebrewing. I used to be on the side that said there definitely was. I mean 2 cases for 20-30 bucks? thats a lot better than 10 dollars a 6er. I thought that I was probably getting close to making back money on all of...

    Possible infection

I did BM's cream of three crops for my first AG BIAB. I started my mash a bit too high, but all in all it wasn'ta terrible brew day. It was also my first time using washed yeast. I had some washed US-05 from an IPA, that I washed and put in one mason jar. I decanted and dumped all of the yeast...

    Who's recipes are your favorite?

So it seems a lot of the same recipes get tossed around a lot here, and they always seem to be from the same few people. I have my first recipe from this site fermenting right now, and another from the same person, but my next several are all going to be from this site. So for the sake of...

    Dunkelweizen recommendation?

i was planning on doing an american wheat and then a dunkelweizen using the same yeast, but I haven't found anybody who makes "american" dunkelweizens. Is it done or would it even taste good? My recipe for my wheat will be: 5lb 2 row 6lb white wheat and lightly hopped with cascade...

Primed for 5 gallons, only have 4 gallons

I put 5 oz of cane sugar boiled into bottling bucket, I only have 4 gallons racked into it. should I rack more and get very cloudy beer? add water up to ~5 gallons? or just bottle the 4 gallons? I don't want to get bottle bombs. Its a blonde ale, so a little bit of extra carbonation...

Why is it so anti-craft beer to get drunk?

It seems the overall tone of this website is that any consumption of beer to the point of drunkenness is frowned upon. I know a lot of you don't agree or subscribe to that, but it seems whenever people are talking about the effects of their homebrew, there are 5 comments that say "I brew beer...
