First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

I checked the thermometers calibration before I started my brew day and it was accurate. Yes, the grain was crushed, but my instincts were telling me they weren't crushed enough. Most of the grains looked whole, but when I squeezed them individually, they would break into pieces easily. I...

    Not hitting my gravity

I pour the wort between 2 buckets six times to aerate and mix. I've never had a problem reaching FG this way. However, I did my first PM this week and missed my starting gravity by 13 points. No clue why it was so low too.

    Not hitting my gravity

OP I had the same problem on my PM and I have no idea why. Would transferring the wort between 2 buckets six times mix the solution enough?

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

Yes, I stirred very well at the beginning of the mash. There isn't anything I can do about it now, but how will my beer turn out? I heated my mash water to 162 and it stayed at 152 during the entire hour long mash. I stirred again in the sparge water too. So next time I should heat the sparge...

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

Haha, no trust me...I read it just fine. Actually, I looked at it about 20 times and each time I was like "There's no way..."

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

That's what I think too, but I checked my hydrometer in distilled water and it read 1.000. When I aerate my wort, I transfer between my primary bucket and my bottling bucket. Before the last transfer, I open the spigot on the bottling bucket to get a sample. I let the hydrometer sit in that for...

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

Was your first AG from NB? What about the 2nd time around? I might have made mistakes during my first PM, but seriously.....I don't see how they could affect the OG by so much.

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

I did stir and squeeze during the sparge. I just don't get how the OG got so damn low...

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

How am I not doing a true partial mash? I followed the guide that has worked for many others

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

I followed this guide: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/easy-partial-mash-brewing-pics-75231/ that's where I got the teabag idea from. The kit is NB's RyePA and the grains were 3lbs Rahr 2-row, 1.5lbs Weyermann Rye malt, and 0.5lbs carared. They came crushed from NB. I also just checked my...

First PM - OG way low. I thought I did everything perfectly?

I've done 9 extract batches and all of them were perfect. Today, I did my first PM and the OG was 1.052. It was supposed to be 1.065. Here's the process of my brew day: 1) Heated 2 gallons to 162* then added 5lbs of grains. 2) The temp dropped down to 153* then I wrapped the pot in a towel and...

    2 Partial Mash Questions

Do you stir throughout the whole process? or just at the beginning? I'm doing my first PM soon and the OP pretty much has the same questions I was about to ask

    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

Just took a gravity reading of my BBP and it's at 1.018 after 12 days. Planning to move it to a secondary after another week. Should I go ahead and start soaking my oak chips now? Then, I can secondary for 2 weeks with the oak chips that had already been soaking in the bourbon for a week

    pellet dry hop question.

I did this the other day, but still managed to suck up a lot of hops. As soon as I stuck the siphon in, the hop layer that formed on the top just broke. A lot of the floating stuff slowly started to fall and I couldn't avoid siphoning it. Any tips?

    Simcoe: Back in stock.

For my next brew I plan on steering away from kits. Any suggestions on what I should get? I was looking at the hop pack and I was thinking: Simcoe, Amarillo, Citra, and Summit. What do yall think? I'm planning on brewing some pale ales/ipas next. Tired of wheats/hefes right now

Favorite hop for dry hopping(pale ale)

I've dry hopped with Citra and loved it! I was there last week and had that IPA from the cask. Soooo delicious. I've never had a cask beer before so that was a pretty awesome experience

    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

Yup, I'm going to try 64 next time. Don't get me wrong tho...this brew is delicious. Just not what I was expecting

    Blood Orange Hefeweizen

So I tried mine after being in the bottles for 2 weeks. It tastes good, but I am not tasting much clove or banana. I was hoping for more clove since I fermented at 62. Do you think the oranges masked the clove/banana?

    Mango IPA

So how did this beer turn out?
